All else failing - you could call their tech support. I realize it is like stopping and ASKING for directions but I doubt you would be the first person to run into this.

dhcp client list includes my desktop, and the router.

Looks like your notebook is no longer a member of your LAN and you don't have guest services enabled on the router.
I'd be curious to know if it would connect thru any unsecured router. When I'm traveling, I piggy back on any unsecured wireless I can find.

long out of warranty, and the replacement cost rivals the cost of paying for the tech support.

yeah, those things were there, too. I will have to bring another laptop home to play with this problem. My own laptop is currently down with a bad monitor - either the transformer blew, or the backlight-lamp died. Can't complain, it is about 4 years old. I think, with SWMBO's permission, parts to fix that will be on order this coming week.

Antenna less? Interesting. My last upgrade was to a G+ with some vendor specific magic to go a little further/faster with their G+ card. That's because I had a few G devices and only one that kept getting dropped; I did not want to upgrade everything when I only needed a little more, so I got the router and one G+ card for less than an N router. It gave me stronger signal all over and that computer that used to get dropped is now smokin' fast.
