okay, for the last few years i have been relying on a dLink Di-524 for home networking. recently I discovered there is an available firmware update for it, and installed it - very excited about the 10-15% increase in through-put, however, because I apparently changed my admin password (doh!) I had to reset the machine to install the update. In the process I lost any ability to connect to it wirelessly. Heretofore, it had been performing like a champ. Any ideas before I just chuck the thing and replace it with a Linksys/Cisco product?

Most of them (that I have dealt with anyway) are going to require you to connect directly for the initial set up after a reset. Do you have a cable lying around?

Have you opened the network connections and checked to ensure wireless connections are enabled? If so, have you refreshed your list of connections? And finally - did (does) your wireless now have some type of key/password associated with it that you may have to re-enter?

Morning,

If it is like most wireless devices, you can initially do setup via direct connection to your computer, through a standard network cable (RJ45). Use your web browser and type in the IP address>
192.168.1.1
This should get you into the menu system to reconfigure it.
Most of the devices use the default "admin" user ID and password...
You could also give the model and serial number to a friend with internet access, he can likely locate the user manual on the companies website, which usually contains the necessary initial setup info.
Hope this helps!

Tony ...

DOH! Of course you have a cable! The router is connected to the cable modem or DSL with one right? You can probably unhook that and use it in one of the other ports to connect to your computer to do the set up. It will probably complain about not finding the net but still let you turn on wireless. Like someone said, find your instructions on the net. But since you are posting here, I am guessing you don't need to find a buddy with Internet access . Good luck! I am something of a geek but there has always been something of a mystique about getting a router right after the first time. I am suspicious about that. When you bring one home new and have the option of taking it back if there is trouble, they practically jump out of the box and start working. But then when you do maintenance... I'm just sayin' ???

Lots of little things. But first see what your computer remembers. Not all routers default to 192.168.1.1. do a command line instruction ipconfig
to see what your default gateway (router) address is. Then type that in a url line (no www, etc). That should open the router page. Click on DHCP Client list. Your PW may have been reset to a blank . Try just pressing enter. If you see your computer, your list is intact since it worked before.

Pete,

I had one of those routers for a long time as well. I stopped using it only because I wanted to use the new wireless-N protocol.
Anyway.
Don't forget that when you did the reset, it reset the entire router to the default config that it was shipped with.
The ip address was set to 192.168.0.1, the admin password was removed, and the wireless SSID was set to 'default' & channel 6.
You will need to use a wired connection (obviously since you can't get a wireless connection working) to re-configure it.
Also, if your using DSL for your internet connection, you will need to see if you need to enable PPPoE as well.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Mike

On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin." On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin."
I would try admin for both the username and password, and then change the password once you are in.

yeah, I have networking cables around here. I regularly have to service laptops for work, and may occasionally bring two or three home. for the sake of speed, I wire them up each time. my desktop is connected to the router, too. So, I can see the router, and have logged into it repeatedly, trying to address this problem

Thanks guys, for the input! Thus far, nothing seems to have changed. I may spend some more time tomorrow. I wonder if any of the issues I am having with it have anything to do with my own fatigue?

Sounds like to me you have the gear and experience to deal with it and are running into the dreaded upgrade syndrome I alluded to. Unless I needed the wired router standalone, I would look ata replacement and break out the 3# hammer for a little stress relief.

Yeah, I think when I need to go wireless here at home again, I may update to one of the cool new Linksys antenna-less units, and take this one in to work, where I could use a 4 port router for services there, instead of carrying the darn computers home. Perhaps that is one of the ways I will stimulate the economy?
