With the arrival of spring and my farmer neighbors getting ready to plant I was motivated to put work on the shop on hold and do something about a garden. This presented two challenges, the southside VA clay is about as easy to work as 3000psi concrete and deer, rabbits, etc abound out here. I constructed a 64 sq ft raised garden enclosed by a fence and imported topsoil and peat moss. The box is 2by stock with the precision joinery of a nail gun supplemented by deck screws The excess fencing will enclose my compost heap next to the garden. Hopefully this will enable me to beat the obscene store prices and poor quality of veggies

Now to set up a rain collection barrel to water it all with!

Looks like a great start, hopefully your thumb is greener than mine

Looks very nice Glenn! So what are you planning on growing?

I best answer that by just saying what I have planted, what grows is a different matter Tomatos, Peppers, Watermelon, pumpkins, green beans, cucumbers, sugar snap peas.

Thanks Phillip, a rain barrel is planned but since the garden is closer to the shp than the house I have to wait until I get the gutters on the shop

I am getting ready to do the same myself in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the visual ideas, as I have been wondering how I was going to build it.

Mmmmm mmm!!! Sounds like a nice harvest coming up for you. I just hope that you're better at growing stuff than I am. My thumb has no green at all. It is about this color----->

Glenn,

I do like the garden. I'd love to do something like that someday. For now, I travel way too much. The weeding, picking, watering, etc would only be done one or two days per week. Don't think I'd have much success that way.

Did I tell you have much I love fresh veggies?

Ray

Looks good, Glenn. Keep us posted. I'm a "raised bed" fan.

Looking good! I've also been contemplating raised beds. Really like the fencing measure to keep the deer out! Last year my garden was devistated by deer. There were 6 or 7 in it every day. Even started eating the green tomatoes and vines outa my tomato cages. The cucumbers , beans, etc. were just mowed off at the ground! Don't know whether it was because of the drought and my garden was easy picking, but I've wondered whether to even try again this year! My dog would run them out and they would just stand at the edge of the woods and wait for him to leave! Never had that much of a problem before. Always just planted extra for the deer and managed to get some for me!

Looks good. take away the fencing and you have exactly what i just did. carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, and potatoes. just for the two of us so its plenty. i dont have deer or anything other than the stray crackhead that will come tramping through it. so no need for a fence.
was gonna set up the 55 gal drum to the guttering but i needed it for the excess veggie im picking up for the mercedes.
