Question

The Shoppe Widow and I would like to head west for our anniversary the end of next month . We want to hit Franklin and do some stuff there.
We like panning for gems but are tired of the tourist traps and " seeded " buckets

Any one know of any " native dirt " operations or other kewl stuff to do ?
Or what not to do for that matter
Lodging tips appreciated too

Thanx for any and all suggestions

Bro: Check out Hiddenite, NC. There are also a couple others which I'm trying to come up with. Hiddenite is near Taylorsville, NC, just north of Statesville.

Also check out Gem Mountain Mine in Spruce Pine, NC and Foscoe Mining Co. near Boone-Banner Elk.

Good luck!! If you find anything over 6 carats, I want to see it!

We have been to Hiddenite a couple of times. Supposedly, they don't seed their buckets for sluicing, but I'm not sure if I believe it. Regardless, it's still fun. They also have a creek that is fun to prospect. If you want to do some real work, they have areas where you can dig. Here is the website.

Gem Mountain buckets are seeded. I've been there several times. The wife likes it....I don't.

Thanx for the replies everyone . We've been to Hiddenite . The Shoppe Widow enjoyed it . I enjoyed her enjoying it but that was the extent of my pleasure

We've done the obligatory info searches online and such. Was hoping someone who lived in or near could give us the " native's view " of it without the commercials

I know Gem Mtn seeds their buckets - I suspect most of those businesses do. It's still fun for a change. Franklin also has some of these businesses, although we haven't 'mined' there. Check out the Mineral Museum or whatever it's official title in Franklin. Beyond that, lots of beautiful scenery. Are you incorporating the cookout in your trip?

I've been to Hiddenite twice. Good fun. If you want a bite to eat, get back on the HWY 90 and head to Taylorsville: Harry Gant's Steakhouse, and a nice diner (on the right) in downtown Taylorsville.
