Angry

The water heater crapped it's pants again last night (as you might recall this happened not too long ago and I had it repaired) ....

So ... looks like I'm out a chunk of change to get it fixed. Of course my house has the "expensive" kind (direct vent) to meet code and venting another way won't be cheap either ...

WHY ME

Sorry to hear about that! A new one will likely be more efficient, if thats any consolation.

Oh man that is a bummer! I hope it can be fixed, however if it is an old one you may save money in the long run getting a new one.

Bummer news Jeremy. I would take a good look at an on demand tankless water heater. More $$ up front, but last longer and never run out of hot water.

I have one and personally I love it! Takes a little longer to heat up but once it is hot, it is forever.

If your WH is natural gs, then give the gas company a call. They are in the business of selling gas year round and a gas WH helps. Here PSNC will not only arranges for installation, but set up payments on your bill. Several years ago (when I had a P-1 plumbing licensee), PSNC installed a heater on one of my jobs for less than I could buy the heater. Heater only lasted 17 years though.

A few years ago the wife and I returned from a party to find the first floor of our house under about 1" of water where the bottom of the water heater had blown out, apparently shortly after we left so it had time to fill up the house. Naturally, all new carpeting had just been installed throughout the first floor along with a shiny new oak kitchen floor at the same time. All was junk along with the base boards and a three-foot-tall strip of sheet rock all around the first floor. Oh yeah, the water heater was junk also.....
Have faith, it gets better eventually!

Well, it's fixed. I'm sure I got "had" (aka ripped off), but I've got warm water again and it's up to code.

RotoRooter came out and installed a new Rheem direct vent unit and removed the piece of crap Whirlpool unit.

Warm water!
