I have bought two of the cheap ones and now have a much better one loml bought for me. Don't skimp too much... you'll get what you pay for.
That said, Alton Brown of the tv food channel made his own. It isn't heat that dries food. Its air movement. All he used was a couple of furnace filters and a box fan. Filters are maybe $2 a piece and a box fan this time of year can be found for $10.
I've learned to use a product called 'fit' a vegetable rinse before drying some fruits like grapes that are dried whole. It helps a lot.

We just got one of the 9 tray models off the Excalibur ebay store as a refurb for an excellent price. It looks brand new, has a great warranty and works like a champ. In fact, it has been going almost nonstop for 3 weeks now.
