Question

As many of you know one of my dogs loves to climb our fence. We're tired of her running the neighborhood so.......I'm looking for an electric fence as a temporary solution to break her of this habit. Does anyone know of or have an Energizer/Charger that I can either borrow or rent and install at my house for a couple weeks?

If you have wire and insulators that would be great too. If not I will be more than happy to buy it to make it work.

Send me a pm or email if you can help.

That would be awesome Mike! When can I come get it? I'll most likely be in Hickory tomorrow. How far are you from Hickory?

Is your dog spayed? That will help (and make her a lot healthier).

I also have a charger you can borrow. It stopped our escape artist and it runs on 2 D-cell batteries so it doesn't do any damage. We have a large dog and a large fenced in yard and it did the trick for us.
Our fenced yard is approximately 130' x 80' with chain link. We zip-tied 2 ft long sections of 1/2" PVC pipe, with a slot cut in the top, to each fence pole. We then ran wire through the slots around the fence and then did an about face and ran the same wire back the way we came so we started and stopped at the same spot. A thin piece of wood kept the two runs separated. The two ends attached to the battery-operated charger. We also had to drive a grounding rod into the ground.

Our dog hit it twice in about 30 minutes and we never had any more problems. A month later we took it down and it's been smooth sailing for the past 6 years.

Hey Mike,
I'll let you know about the weekend. Would be great to make a short road trip and finally meet you.

Susan,
Thank you for the offer. I may take you up on it if I can't get up to Mike's.

Heh. Reminds me of my younger son's dog. A few years back he brought home two very young pups someone had dropped off waaay out in the country. Put up a huge electric dog fence, about 50 feet by 100 feet, then an angle for about another 50 feet. That kept them in. For about 2 days. Then caught them yipping, and crawling under the bottom wire. Went to Agrisuppy, found a controller rated for dogs as the bottom range, up to cattle. That did the trick. Only took them a couple of tries, and they never got closer than a foot to the fence.

He later got rid of one pup, and kep the other, a female. He'd take her out riding, and she'd jump in the bed of his truck. So, eventually she got the idea of jumping the fence. But she was very friendly once she knew, would bark and not get close if she didn't. And eventually she had pups. Eleven. She stayed in the pen then. After the pups got big enough to get around the pen, the learned very quickly to stay away from the fence. Funny as could be, to go out there to feed and water tham and have them in a large Vee in the corner of the fence, but almost an exact foot from it. And if one heard something, or a squirrel came down, one would start running to the back of the fence, and the rest would follow in a herd. All mutts, and all very friendly. Later the fence got unplugged once or twice, or the circuit breaker tripped, but the pups never got near the fence anyway.

You are lucky that you have smart dogs. I have threee bulldogs, there's no stopping one of them, short of hitting her with a 2x4. I have a 4' fence around my property, And a wireless fence system. When Bubba (real name is Laura) wants out, she gets out. She charges the gate and throws all of her weight at it, she keeps on doing it until the latch bends, all the while taking hits from the collar (45 seconds on/2minutes off). The collar is much tighter than it should be. The only good thing is that we don't live close to any one, and she won't go too far because once the adrenalin from the excitement wears off she starts feeling the shock and makes a bee-line to the safe zone. I've seen her, in the hit zone, take 3-5 45 second shocks, until I can lasso her in. She's an English Bulldog, all brawn no brain. The others get close to the hit zone, but back up when they hear the beeping prior to the shocks. Everybody that sees it laughs as she shakes off the shocks. I've just accepted the stupidity.

My neighbor has a Husky type dog that will creep up to the line where it beeps and lay there till the battery in the collar dies and quits beeping and then she is free to run.

My neighbor's Aussie was UNTRAINABLE using the underground fence system. But my three strands of electric fence trained her in less than a day. Plus it trained my dogs and the other dogs in the neighborhood. First of the week, a HUGE dead tree blew over and fell on the fence. I unplugged the charger, but not one dog knew it, as they didn't try it. Electric fences can be described in in word- RESPECT! I have a feeling I could put up,a wire ( uncharged) around my dog's food bowl, and she would starve to death before risking touching the wire.

My older son got one of those buried wire, and shocker collar, systems for his dash-hound. It wasn't until he cranked up the voltage to where it'd probably stop a bull did he stop that little dog from ignoring it.

The fence does have a gate type thing you can unhook and pull back. Even if you opened that the dogs wouldn't get out. But when feeding them, I'd normally just step over the fence, rather than messing with the gate. Stumbled one day, and wound up with one leg between the strands. That's something that'll wake you up. Gotta say, not something I'd care to repeat, even tho it did make my joints stop hurting for a couple of weeks. Beats peeing on an electric fence tho, like one of my buddies did, back when I was in high school. And, no, that was NOT me. I'd definitely recommend an electric fence for a dog pen, over any collar, or anything else. It won't hurt dogs, but it will sure educate them. Every once inawhile a squirrel would creep under the bottom strans. And often brush their tail against the stans. It educates squirrels to. LOL

I have 2 huskies and use a horse electric charger.
Bought one for dogs and my male went over and sat on the wire. didn't bother him unless his paw or nose touched the wire.

Took the charger back and got one for horses and neither one of the dogs will come close to the fence.

My female bit me one day when i was out feeding them. She gets all excited when you bring the food out. She was running around me and got close to the wire and got hit. We was only about a foot apart and she bit me out of instinct, I have see both of them get into a fight if they are close together and one of them gets hit by the wire.

All i could do was laugh when she bit me. Good thing i had jeans on or it would off been a good bite.

We too use an electric livestock fence around our yard. The fence charger is rated for something like 70 miles of fence; as my wife says, "it will stop your heart" when you get zapped, especially if you're on wet ground!

Out of the hundreds of dog rescues that have graced our back yard, none of them challenged it more than once. Usually after getting zapped they don't get off of the back porch for a couple of days.

Hands down, it works better than the shock collars for difficult dogs.

I have an Akita/Border Collie mix, she's a smart one. We have her on the invisible fence system and she does great! We have little kids in our neighborhood and she isn't to friendly with them. So, in order for us to not get sued, we use the invsible fence mounted on a 5 foot fence surrounding our backyard. It keeps her in. Now, I realize you probably have a much larger yard to keep your dog(s) in, but this was my solution.
