Copy of an e-mail I received today two weeks AFTER I received my stimulus rebate:

Over 130 million Americans will receive refunds as
part of President Bush program to jumpstart the economy.

Our records indicate that you are qualified to receive the
2008 Economic Stimulus Refund.

The fastest and easiest way to receive your refund is by
direct deposit to your checking/savings account.

Please click on the link and fill out the form and submit
before June 04th, 2008 to ensure that your refund will be
processed as soon as possible.

Submitting your form on June 04th, 2008 or later means that
your refund will be delayed due to the volume of requests we
anticipate for the Economic Stimulus Refund.

To access Economic Stimulus Refund, please click here. <<< DO NOT CLICK!!! (Glennbear added this warning for North Carolina Woodworker site viewing)

The phishing scammers are getting REALLY good, I was happily surprised to find that my Norton security suite had already had the sender pegged as a known phisher which means some of the less cyber savvy folks might be saved from this scam Putting the date in is a pretty slick way to speed responses before the FBI tracks them down and brings their activities to a screeching halt

I hope you sent that to phishing@irs.gov.

I'm sure they have already received a copy, but I always like to make sure that the entity being falsely represented is fully aware.

A good rule of thumb is to NEVER provide ANY personal information in response to an unsolicited email message.
Additionally, if I need to give a PIN or password to someone legitimately, I break it up into two separate emails.

Always remember that eBay, PayPal, the government and your banks or credit unions ALREADY know what your passwords/PINs are and will not ask you via email to log in to "reconfirm" them. When in doubt about your "soon to expire due to blah-blah-blah" Paypal account, etc., open up a NEW browser and go to your usual start page, log in and see if there's a problem. 99.999% of the time, there will not be!

MTCW,

Steve
