Now, here we are. A bit late to put the cat back in the bag. Maybe we are paying now for our past huberis?

TOLL ROAD - Jerry having live in a toll road state and having to commute on on toll roads twice daily - I can assure you this is not the answer.
Seems we are looking for long term solutions - this is good don;t get me wrong. But we need a fix now and at the same time a long term solution. At this rate we simply can not wait another 2, 5 or 10 years for both.
Oil prices broke new ground today - reached $142.26 dollars before settling slightly.
Like I said we need a fix NOW.
Thanks

Admittedly, I have little experience with toll roads, so I defer to your experience & expertise. The best METHOD I've seen is the NJ Turnpike, where you get a ticket when you get on & don't pay 'til you get off. Traffic flows better that way.
Short term: what do all y'all propose?
Long term: what do all y'all propose?
Let's have a brainstorm session! Although, my "storm" is more like a tempest in a teapot.......

Let's have a brainstorm session! Although, my "storm" is more like a tempest in a teapot....... Short term solution
1) Drive down the price by lifting the 27 year old off shore oil drilling ban and increase capacity of "home" oil production - meaning the Alaskan pipe line goes to the US, not overseas. Open up the Alaskan wildlife refuse to drilling and anywhere else oil may be here at home. It' been proven this can be done with will little impact to the environment, if that's what everyone is so conserned about
At the same time start with the long term solution -
1) develop safe hydrogen cell powered ceramic lined or other non corrosive proof motors - it can be done but will take some time to develop safely. I dig the idea of dropping water into my tank for fuel, all that comes out of the exhaust is steam. I've done little mad scientist work with plain old tap water a little table salt and I've got enough HO gas of a coffee can of water to make a pretty loud boom. I mean if I can do it with a battery charger and a few SS plates - why can't some of the high paid scientists make a cell to produce next to free energy?
2) Spin up wind power to create electricity - wind is free
3) Solar Power - Sun is also free
4) Water power - used to some degree already - what's wrong with using more of it?
5) Other cheap alternative fuels.

Let's have a brainstorm session! Although, my "storm" is more like a tempest in a teapot....... Short term...eliminate unnecessary travel. Establish car pools then use them when possible. Keep your vehicles tuned up, tires inflated properly.
Long term...I wonder if high fuel prices will lead to folks living closer to their workplace or accelerating the trend of working from home, or maybe both. We need alternative fuel development. I may be crying over spilt milk but can't help but think that emerging economies (ummmm, China) that WE are fueling with our dollars are somewhat to blame for fuel demand levels. However, it was bound to happen at some point in time.
I have been driving a 2005 Chevy crew cab for about 4 years now with an 18 mile drive to work. Affordable for me at 3 dollars/gallon. I use the truck a lot for its intended purpose.
I just started a new job Monday and now drive 48 highway miles one way. I have left the truck at home and am driving LOMLs car while the kids are out of school for the summer. I use 3 gallons/day in the Civic. When school starts back she will drive 60 miles/day total dropping the kids off and picking them up (school buses are not a viable option).
I had considered getting rid of my Chevy crew cab and buying another Honda but the payback just isn't there. If I still feel good about things a year from now then I'll sell the house and move closer to the new job.

Oil companies have always made profits, and no one has proven they're gouging us now as opposed to 10 years ago.
As for government, we need them to keep their hands off free commerce, but, free up drilling areas in ANWR, the Gulf, and off our coasts. Until WE begin to solve our own problems we're striking at the wind.
I was in Canada all this week, and they are contemplating 2 new refineries, one in Newfoundland and one in St. Johns, New Brunswick. WE haven't built one in 35+ years! Personally, I think a modern refinery in Morehead City with offshore oil would be a great thing.
Environmentalists have to realize that "renewables" and new technology is 15 years down the road. We CAN drill and build NOW if we get started. Until then, we pay!
My 2 pennies worth.
