Does an inexpensive hobby exist?

I will be cutting back on the furniture I build because of the increase in the price of wood and the cost to go get it. Ten years ago the cost of the wood to build a project was never a consideration. Jump in the truck and take off to Steve Walls to buy wood, not today. What the gas would cost is about what I used to pay for the wood. Guess my wife will be getting all those craft type things she is always asking for but which I never seem to have time to make.

To add insult to injury my wife is dead set on moving to a new place with more pasture acrerage. This way we can add to our other inexpensive hobby, horses. If you think the cost of woodworking has gone up check out what has happened with owing horses. Coastal bermuda hay cost me $2 a bale in the spring and now would cost me at least $9 a bale if I could find it.

Dang, I might have to go back to work just to have something to do.

Did I mention the size of my shop will double if we buy this new place. There is a new building behind the barn and all I will need to do is have Duke Energy place a meter and then wire it. Guess I will bite the bullet and let her have what she wants.

I think I need to say I understand these are just hobbies for me and the folks that do these type things for a living are really hurting.

To windy to ride so back to the shop to work on the triple dresser.

Is it obvious that I am waiting for glue to dry.

Tell me about it!

I stopped by Ace Hardware today "just because I was in the area." Seventy-five dollars later I left with a few saws, chisels and a block plane. I hope my car allowance gets here soon.

My second hobby is bass fishing and, yes, I have the big boat/motor combo so I can get to the other side of the lake fast. Talk about not being able to afford a hobby, I vowed that I wasn't buying any more tackle until I used what I have. Several tackle stores call me often to make sure I am OK.

I see some combination of hobbies. Just think of how much fun you'll have building tack boxes, saddle racks, fencing, and doing all the barn and stall repairs after one of the critters decides to kick something down rather than let the vet check his teeth. Did you say english saddle? How about building jumps, gates, etc.? Well, at least this kind of stuff requires less expensive wood.

First it was racing motorcycles,
then it was sports cars,
then a 40' boat,
then kids came along and bought a horse farm,
(BTW-Know to make a small fortune raising horses? Start with a large one!)
Then it was FLOG
Now just woodworking.
It all cost the same, but with woodworking at least you have something left after the money is gone!

I find myself in a great position.

My best friend for the last 20+ years has the horse farm, so I just show up to ride

I did own a '62 Beetle which I sold. Gone are the days of rebuilding a VW motor for a few hundred bucks. So now it's just WWing and motorcycles.

In my case, it's either sawdust or firewood, unless I'm working with PT wood, in which case it's trash. But I have every intention of improving.

Underneath all of that mess is a future stealth gloat.

This sound suspiciously like a stealth gloat. I've been caught myself recently, so I now recognize the symptoms.

Are there any inexpensive hobbies? Of course. Yodeling. Hope you got talent. Let me know when I can pick up your tools.

On the other hand, that might scare the horses. Guess you better stick with woodworking

Hobbys expand to consume disposable income, but that's a result of buying what you want, not what you need.

If you want to save money, build small labor intensive things like jewelry boxes.

And yes, I too saw several stealth gloats in there.

Are there any other kinds of hobbies?

They all start innocently enough:
A Whitman album for Indian Head pennies;
A 25-year-old, cheap ham radio transceiver;
An old car that runs but needs "love;"
A couple of guppies in a small aquarium;
A hammer, saw, and book on cabinet-making (and a dad who's a carpenter);
My first Stanley #5...

I guess once you're underway in a hobby, you just have to come to a point where you're satisfied with what you have for toys. For some of us or some hobbies, that moment never comes!

I've always wanted to learn how to fly, but have stopped myself before I started.

Steve

I'd just be happy to have one or two non-cheap hobbies. Woodworking, golf, hunting etc. I gave up fishing bass tournaments and sold the boat. If you want really expensive, introduce LOYL to your hobbies. My wife likes using bandsaw and is absolutely obsessed with hunting now. Of course I did give her a band saw one year for her birthday and a rifle for Christmas.....at her request. Makes it a lot easier to buy new tools, but the guns now need to come in pairs...ouch! I refuse to take her to the golf course, can't afford that. Not to mention it would really mess up some good trips to Myrtle Beach.

I was looking at two band saws online 2 weeks ago and she walked by and saw them and asked questions. Then said "let's buy the big one".
