Hello friends!
Gross Gott (may the lord be with you, in German)

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have come to find out that cherry is very very hard to get over here(in Germany that is) and if you find some you will have to offer your first child to the gods for payment. I am helping a friend get into woodworking and we decided that a good project to make is an heirloom tool chest out of cherry. Well I have done the calculations and it will take about 40BF per tool chest. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me with some wood shipments. I will pay for the shipping and your time in helping me do so. I do howerver need 80bf of 3/4 planed cherry, so if you know anyone that has some cherry at a good price and would be willing to ship it to me I would be in your debt. I would also throw in some German Steins if you would like. Thanks for your help and god bless my friends.

I have contacted wall lumber and they will only send in 20BF packages. The reason why this is not advantageous to my endeavor is that they will charge me an arm and leg to specify length and width. If they ship one of their UPS bundles I do not know if most of the stock will be usable for my projects (that is without glueups, planing etc) I still have to adhere to the shipping restrictions to an APO address, which are quite generous actually. So if anyone has some time on their hands to help I would be greatfull Be blessed.

Why not look into some native woods in that area. I am sure Germany has some nice trees. German Oak - Pedunculated Oak, and German Beech - Fagus sylvatica should be easily available. Also most of the native hadwood available here grow there too. Prunus serotina - Black Cherry should be available as is Hard Maple, Birch, Elm and other Oaks.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Michael, it would help to have the nominal sizes of the lumber you need other than thickness. Since you are planning a chest, I would think the lengths would be under four feet -- ideally, a materials list would help. 80 BF is 40 four foot boards six inches wide.

DaveO, I have been searching for some place to get stock. The supervisor at the woodshop on post can get some beech and oak but its very expensive and not a lot. They mainly do refinishing, a lot of soldiers go to flea markets and get old furniture and refurb it at the woodshop. I just wish I could find a supplier over here thats relatively close. I will post some sizes of what im looking for. God bless

If you want to follow up on Dave's suggestion, you should probably visit one of the less localized boards like WoodCentral. I haven't been out there since I found North Carolina Woodworker, but I doubt that caused them to have to shut down. Anyway, you could probably find someone there with local knowledge and maybe even get hooked up with a small local supplier.

Michael,
Let me get in touch with a master woodworker I know in Erlangen.
He has all kinds of wood in stock and I'm sure he can get some or know where to get some lumber.
I posted a shop tour while I was in Germany. That was his shop.
He has all sorts of veneers (that he cuts himself) and wood stock.
I'm sure he has a local supplier.
I need to get in touch with him to see if he is willing....

Let me know your shipping limitations for the APO......

Ron

Ron, thanks for getting Michael that information. I've been trying to figure out how to send wood to him, and wasn't coming up with much of an idea. North Carolina Woodworker strikes again.

Michael,

When I lived in Germany near Ramstein (1996-2000) I saw a number of small saw mill operations out in the country. I never stopped to see what types of wood they had but that might be an option. But of course it was all rough sawn but they might have planed wood also. I know they used a lot of beautiful white pine in their restaurants for trim and panelling.
