(snake) Was up at Hanging Rock State park today and saw this little guy sunning himself on a rock near one of the waterfalls. He eventually made his way into the water and disappeared in some rocks. I tried looking on the following website but couldn't make a positive ID. Any thoughts?
Thanks. http://www.bio.davidson.edu/projects...es/snakes.html
Pics are not real good. He was about 18 inches. |

(snake) I think that is a corn snake - although not as bright red as I've seen them before if it was a corn snake they are nonvenomous, it feeds on small rats, mice, birds, frogs and lizards.

My snake pictures always have a lot more red than that! |

(snake) I think corn snake is a good guess. I can't debate that with the colors that it shows in the picture...but...if I were to take a second guess, I would say northern water snake. They look A LOT like a copperhead, but the colors are opposite. This seems to have the same 'saddle' patterns.
Chris

Kinda hard to tell by the pictures but the top right hand picture sure looks a lot like the snake Bill snapped pics of.
Bill did you pick it up and look at it's belly? If so that would be a dead give away - the corn snakes belly looks a lot like Indian corn, where as the northern water snake would have the same markings that's on it's back.
Although I don't like snakes much I find them very interesting. I need to make a trek up to Mikes for some excitement .gif)

Yea, the pics I have are not great, so it does make it hard to tell for sure. And no, I didn't pick it up to see it's belly.
Mike, I'm gonna have to pass on your offer to come see the copperheads. .gif) I don't mind non-venomous snakes as long as they don't startle me. But the only way I will get close to a venomous snake is if there is glass between us. |

(snake) I would guess Northern Water Snake also. It looks alot like the one in my Koi pond and I almost caught him Saterday. I sure want to get him out before he gets big enough to start eating the Koi or lay eggs.

Nothing wrong with snakes just leave them alone and they'll leave you alone

I just don't want my kids to lose a limb or die from a poison snake bite so all copperheads get the appropriate dose of lead. |

I'm on board with N. Watersnake as well. The pattern's right and so's the habitat. You wouldn't normally find a corn snake in the water.
PS - I've already rescued three box turtles since moving here, too. Steve
