Had the horses out for a ride this morning. While sitting up on a ridge, surrounded by great hardwoods and overlooking a beautiful lake, I received a call from the neurosurgeon's office. The doc had looked at my MRI's this morning and wanted to see me today. I did not think this was a good sign. Cut the ride short and went to Charlotte.

Was told I could either have surgery or wait to become paralyzed from the neck down. I think I will have the surgery. I trust this doc because last spring when I ruptured a disc between L5 and S1 he told me to go home and try to wait it out. The ruptured disc has been a little bit of a problem but nothing I would have surgery for.

This problem is up between C4 and C5, I think. I was in a little bit of shock at the time.

He told me if I had been thrown from a horse this morning there was little chance that I would not be paralyzed. I can not even pick up my 14 month old grandson until after the surgery.

Funny, my wife and I were talking this weekend about how I need to stop worrying so much about 10 years from now and start enjoying today. I believe I will be spending a good deal of time thinking about this for the next while.

The good news is, if things go well with the surgery I should come out of this OK.

Thank for letting me whine here before I have to tell my wife the news. As if you had a choice.

Oh, what started all this was my telling my family doctor I am experiencing numbness in my arms, hands and legs. Pain would have gotten my attention a lot quicker.

Had a "carbon copy" experience about 1995 while living in Brunswick county. Told the Doc I wanted to wait until goose season was over. He said, "OK, as long as you understand that if you got rear-ended in a car, you can be paralyzed from C-7 down."

I got the point!! Had the surgery. Piece of cake, only one night in hospital, never took even a Tylenol for pain. Wore the collar for 6 weeks and haven't had a problem since.

Who's your surgeon. Someone at Carolina Neuro & Spine?

Good luck and God bless.

I think you are entitled to "whine" as much as you want to. So sorry to hear about your problems, but I agree, surgery, while not desirable any time, is the best option. Sure hope things go well for you and that you will soon be back making sawdust.
Our prayers are with you and your family.

Had a laminectomy in '93 in the same vertebra. I'm sure they've improved the procedure since then but I've never regretted it. Hope everything goes well. Take doc's advice about rest afterwards. I didn't & the lamination slipped.

Keye -- the surgical techniques are much better now than several years ago -- my wife had a C5-C6 laminectomy in the late 70's, more than a week in the hospital and was 10-12 weeks recovering -- then she had C3-C4 done this Spring, was out in two days and back on her feet in a few days! You are doing the right thing and having it taken care of now. We all wish you a speedy recovery and a rapid return to that horsback ride on the ridge.

Sorry to hear the bad news, but at least there's a straightforward way out. Good luck with the surgery!

Sorry to hear that you have to have surgery, but glad to hear that after surgery you should do well. We will be thinking about you!

Keye, you are in the right frame of mind. Gotta take care of yourself today, so ten years from now will be enjoyable.

I had a laminectomy and discectomy in one operation on two discs L4 and L5 back in the early 90's took several months to recover but I'm good as new today - I went under the knife. I heard they do lazer now with two or three little holes instead of a 8' long slit in your back closed up with staples. You'll do fine just follow doctors orders and we'll be praying for your speedy recovery.
