I was talking to a friend who also does WW'ing and we were both talking about we are just burnt out on working in the shop.

Do you guys/gals ever get like this? I have been working alot on the Landscaping Business and I'm just so tired I never feel like getting down in the basement to work. Do you think it will pass? I have been thinking about putting my tools up for sale but hesitate to do that because I think it will pass and I will want to do it again. But I hate to have it sitting there wasting away.

I'm not even in the shop a tenth of some of the NCWWers, but I get that way too. Sometimes just not in the mood to woodwork ... however, if you feel you can't recover, I'm willing to see your tool list for sale (I know your shop is WELL equipped!)

burn out is a natural part of many things. I have been working in my industry for 7 years, and wonder if I am hitting that point now?

too often we make rash decisions about things like this, and find ourselves staring at an empty room where "blank" used to be, wishing we could fire it up and make something. You know, just like Jeff... and his lathe dreams!

I have been there a few times. The worst of it I came very close to selling everything in the shop. Fortunately, I didn't. For me, when I get like this, I don't go out to the shop for whatever period of time. I will do my other hobbies, play with the kids, just do whatever I feel like other than shop time. I will go out there some, but it will be to clean up straighten, up whatever I feel like. For the most part, I just read mags, keep up with the site, and wait until I get back in the mood.

To me, it is just a phase. One that I expect to go through ever so often.

Burnt out I am more burnt out with the landscaping industry. I deal with the same thing everyday, folks with too much dreams and no budget to realise them. Crappy lots that folks got for little cost and now have to put a lot of cost into them to make them usuable.
Woodworking in my shop is the only time that I am totally in control of the outcome. I can choose the wood and make what I want out of it. If I make mistakes it's my doing and not someone else's problem I am trying to fix. Woodworking is my release and opportunity to be fully in control of the outcome.
Woodworking is a hobby, it should be enjoyable. If it isn't it's work. Take a break let the craziness of spring die down, and you'll find the enjoyment again.
Or just give me all your tools and you'll miss them even faster.

Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Jon, if you feel burnt out, it's time to sell your tools and go do something else. Just PM me and me alone before you start advertising

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about having a "dip" in WW interest. It's natural. Sometimes, you just need to take a break. Go do something totally different. Happy is the man who has varied interests. If after six months of being wood-sober you still have no incentive, then it's time to start thinking about a change in earnest. Just remember: Even Filet Mignon and Lobster get boring if you have it EVERY DAY.

In the mean time, stock up on Festool please

Have you thought about trying a new project that is outside of your comfort zone? In the past when I've reached burnout, with things outside of woodworking, I try and come up with something that pushes my comfort zone and forces me to add new skills. You may get back in touch with the original fascination you had when you first started woodworking. The pleasure of looking on a piece of work and saying "wow, that was cool .. and I DID THAT!" Sometimes learning a new skill for a project will open up the floodgates for a lot more projects that you would have never thought about before.

Consider your tools an asset. Can you get what you paid for them? Most likely not. Are they costing you anything just sitting there? If an emergency arose, would you have just the tool to fix it, or did you sell it. We all go through phases. I have been through a couple of hobbies, that I'm thankful for having been there, but don't have the "burning desire" right now for them. Sometimes, though we all dream too big, but only find out so later. That is what makes life interesting though.

I get burned out at times on woodworking but eventually the spark returns. I also like to play golf and everytime I play I realize that I am a better woodworker than golfer and wonder why I play the stupid game when I could be in the shop and not making near as many mistakes: Truth is it would be hard to play worse golf than I do

Give it time, the urge will hit again.

I agree with Boilermaker. I have lots of things to try for the first time. I am going to make a Maloof style roker this year. Someday I want to try marquetry (Sic) and scroll sawing. I would like to learn to turn bowls too, and Intarsia. So if I ever get bored there is soooooo much I don't know!!
Take Travis's advise and take a break until inspiration hits you. I t took you a long time to bring those tools togehter just right, don't break up the family too soon.

I have definitely hit burnout before. Sometimes starting a new challenging project helps, sometimes learning a new skill as suggested above. I learned to turn pens and kind of turning bowls, and have learned to carve spoons (sort of). It also seems as though you have a lot on your plate right now,.

Don't sell anything for at least 6 months. Be sure to clean up your shop before you leave it for a while so it will be ready to go when you are - nothing worse than having to start again by cleaning up the last. Do something else you enjoy - read a book, golf, spend time with family/friends, go fishing...... Give yourself permission to not work in the shop. There will be some point when you are reading one of the wwing magazine and think - "hey - I'd like to/wonder if I can make that". If you've loved it before, you mostly likely will again.
