If you bought what was considered to be a top of the line box spring and mattress, how long would you expect it to last?
If you were buying now what would you buy? |

NOT Serta, worst decision I've made recently. The first mattress failed after a year, the replacement, an upgrade to the first, is no better.
If I was to do it over, Select Comfort

Look for a warranty, metal vents on the sides of the mattress, and heavy cloth handles, in addition to a substantial cloth covering.

Most of the mattress companies have good high end stuff and you should get 15 - 20 years out of them. Me personally, I buy from the Mattress Factory and haven't had any complaints.

I expect it to last 15 years, would be happy with 20. It replaces an air bed, not a Sleep Number but one of the predecessors. It was OK, but not very durable, the foam top kept ripping, and you ended with a low spot in the middle of the bed. The ONLY advantage an air bed provides is that you can have completely different levels of firmness, and still have one bed. If firmness is something on which you can agree, a coil mattress is superior.
So far, very happy with the Simmons. It provides great support, waking up refreshed every morning.

Select Comfort all the way. First it was a queen, then we moved & got a twin king with the adjustable head/foot option. It floats in the bed frame with rollers on the floor & it's like having 2 twin beds side by side, but we don't disturb each other with tossing & turning plus we can set the firmness to our needs for how we feel. She can read in bed if she likes upright & it doesn't bother me. It spoils ya for vacations. Nothin' like it at Motel 6! .gif)

Sooo many different models- same models have different names at different retailers, and different prices, so you can't comparison shop between stores within the same brand!
What used to a "box spring" years ago is now at most places literally just a box!!! No springs, no padding, no topper! It is just to fill thevspace between the bed frame and the mattress. Have the prices for "sets" been lowered to account for this? Nope!!
Frankly I have no suggestions how to get a truly good mattress that isn't outrageously over-priced. |

But my wife loves her firm mattress from "The Original Mattress Factory." You can't beat their prices. And you can go and visit their factory over on Spring Forest RD in Raleigh, and see exactly how they make them. They will show you cut aways of both theirs and their competitor's mattresses. Impressive to me. |

He spent a couple years managing the business and these are the things I remember from what he told me ...
- A good quality mattress should last 10 solid years. Of course it doesn't just "disappear" after 10 years, but just like an old car or bike the performance level starts to degrade fast after the so long.
- Markup on mattresses is between 300% and 600% depending on the time of year, make, model and market.
Now, with that said I have been looking at mattresses too lately. Wondering if the memory foam ones are worth the extra gold.
One thing I know ... I don't want a Sleep Number bed. After getting those in so many hotel rooms now, I NEVER get a good sleep on them. Always feels weird. |

The Woodhaven is a decent set, and plenty of my customers sleep well on them. That being said, I sleep on a Simmons at home, and expect to get another 6 years or so out of it. Manufacturers offer a 10 year warranty because the failure rate is quite low, but this doesn't mean that ALL of their mattresses will last this long. If yours isn't right, follow up on your warranty, you may have a claim.

I wish there was an answer key for this quiz!
I bought a new Serta about 5 years ago. I've regretted it 2/3 of the time since~ ( 1/3 of the nights I am away from home at the fire station)
LOML has regretted it more than I, I suspect.
I can't run out and replace the thing. Only reason - $$!!
If I bought a jar of peanut butter I was as unhappy with I'd chunk it in the trash and never have a second thought.
Hopefully about next summer - fall we'll be replacing the junk I bought.
Best thing I can say about Serta is their sheep on the commercials are well drawn.
Since Serta hasn't 'chosen' to stand by their product - the side collapsed over 4 years ago. They said yeah, that happens sometimes...
I haven't gone on a smash Serta vendetta, but I've voiced my concerns to enough friends and family and fire departments that have asked (with NONE that have bought mattresses buying Serta) that I believe its cost them. Small consolation but its the best I have. |

I know several people that have them, and no complaints from anyone. I really liked their attitudes, and product. It's definitely worth a visit.
