LOML and I will be in the Boone/Todd/West Jefferson area next week for a few days and plan to take the High Country Back Roads Southern and Northern Loop trips that are noted on the http://www.highcountrybackroads.com/ web site.

Are there any other "must see" places/things in that area that anyone would recommend. Also any "must eat" places (not looking for an black ties restuarants...just good food)?

I second the Shatley Springs, family style meal and good ole country cooking last time I was there anyway.

Gratuitous commercial plug: you can tour some of the wineries in Yadkin County. A couple are just a few miles off Hwy 421.

Only place that comes to mind os the Todd General Store. Its kind of a fun place. Nothing like it used to be. I have driven to it for the sole purpose of goin there more than once. Long ago.
Before it was "discovered". You could find REAL FINDS long ago.
I bought antique planes there years ago for a FEW dollars. Antique spinning wheels for under $40... Those days are gone.
Still its an interesting place and you can make a find at times.
I get Jefferson and West Jefferson confused. One has a cheese shop that is worth visiting. Long ago and far away I frequented that part of the state. Thanks for the memory stir!

Be sure and see the frescoes in the churches in Ashe County. One is in Glendale Springs, and another is in West Jefferson. Avoid the "steak house" in Jefferson. Unfortunately, US Saw is no longer in business in West Jefferson, B&D took care of that site. Check out Mt. Jefferson State Park. Go and rent a canoe on the east fork of the New River. If weather is clear, go over beyond Blue Ridge Parkway on Hwy 16- Spectacular views. Hwy 194 between Boone and WJ is an interesting trip.

My nephew owns FlipSide, Chicago style deep dish pizza in Boone. It' across the street from the main entrance to Appalachian University. He also makes some killer banana pudding. He uses my mothers recipe that she got when she was in high school some 65 years ago.
