Knock on wood - we have not seem any snakes yet - our neighbors have enough cats I think to keep them at bay - and our dog might just might let us know if one is around if she doesn't stick her tail in between her legs and run from it

What kind of liner is in the koi pond? I've had the same problem and more than likely isn't a copperhead. Howerver, I care not what his first name is if his last name is snake. Only good first name is dead. I've used a pump up BB gun to kill snakes in the koi pond. It's been my observation that once taking up residence there, they don't leave unless dead.

I've always wanted to go to a snake handling church and sit in the set right next to the door

The liner is rubber so shooting at it is not something I want to do and too many rocks in there for a projectile to bounce off of a nd for it to hide in.

I'm fairly sure its a northern watersnake thanks to the links from Andrew and Mark we think we have it identified. Made a snake pole at work last night so we should be able to catch it fairly soon. Right now its prolly not big enough to eat any of my Koi but it will get big enough. There is a buffet of tadpoles to feast on .

If all else fails, you might consider the solution I suggested to Sapwood for his critter problems :

I noticed at Lowe's today that they have a snake repellent [napthalene (ie mothballs) + sulfur]. Anyone know if this works?

Go

Gofor you'll find as many people that swear it works as you will that swear it doesn't...
There is no scientific finding that says it ought to - nothing in the formulation that will hurt or impune a snake, according to the scientific research I can find.
One theory is that the mammals etc. the snakes feed on seem to dislike the stuff and their absence sends the snakes away to feed...
Kinda like killing grubs to rid your yard of moles ( the state says they are endangered and it is illegal to intentionally poion them. I know where they can trap animals to restock their yards if they want to!!!)
