I've got what I believe is a copperhead (I'm hoping it 's not) thats taken up residence in my Koi pond. He's about 8 niches long and been there since at least Wenesday, at least thats when we first saw it. I was sure hoping it would crawl on out and leave but we saw it again this afternoon poking it's head up and almost had it in the net but that little sucker is fast in the water.

I've got the stuff at work to make a snake pole so I guess thats what I'll do tomorrow night. The Guilford county medical examiner milks snakes for their venom and he told us they were giong to be bad this year because of all the heavy spring rains. The real problem is the Koi pond is about 10 feet out the back door. Would like to take Mr Remington and take care of him that way but that will cost me about 3 grand in pond repairs

A shovel, best snake killer out there. I killed a 2' copperhead in my back yard 2 or 3 weeks ago. My dog warned me about it.

FWIW, a friend who did lots of crawlspace work swore that snakes couldn't stand mothballs and would clear out if you scattered them around. Might keep them away from your house at least.

If you ever see a smoking furrow in the ground odds are there'll be a snake at one end and me at the other moving at Mach speed.

I am doubtful that it is a Copperhead snake. That is not the environment that they prefer to live in. More than likely if you have a venomous snake, characterized by their cat like eye pupils, and wide triangular head, you have a Cottonmouth. Either way a shovel should dispatch it quickly. Just remember you are much bigger and more powerful than it is, and hold all the cards.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Dave I hope you are right that it may not be a copperhead and hope your dead wrong about a cottenmouth, it is rare to see them this far west I under stand. Its to small to tell for sure and hard to get a good look when its under water and there are non-venomous snakes with similar markings. I know a shovel or hoe both work great (12 guage Remington works better) but these things are alot faster under water than on land.

I'll be able to catch the Med Examiner AKA Snake Man in the morgue at the hospital in the next few days and he will tell me for sure.

I'll come wrestle with that bad boy - it's not that I like snakes cause I don't - I just find them very interesting creatures. BTW a .22 is a great little snake stick... I believe it, that snakes will / are going to be bad this year. For the first time ever I spotted a eastern diamond back he was a big bad snake. I didn't mess this that one... at all...

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/f...ty-snake-14572

Be sure and snap a pic of your snake if you can Brian

Thanks

Many long years ago my German Sheppard mutt treed a snake of some variety in her fence (water moccasin, brown water snake or copper head? We never looked close enough to identify it). My dad grabbed my sling shot and a couple rocks from the drive way. He caught the snake right at the base of the skull with and rock and ... gonzo! no more snake, just and dead body to be disposed of.

This is turning to be a horrid year for snakes ( I almost said horridus horridus croatulus)- the name for timber rattlers- an SO appropriate).
We had a 3 year old with a confirmed copperhead bite. A week later a 30+ with a confirmed rattle snake bite.
LOML saw a chipmonk meet his end to a black snake. Last week she was walking the littlest dog and stepped on a snake. She felt it wrap around her ankle. She jumped back and found the second one. As she picked Czak up, yep, she found the third! She left before anyone else joined the family reunion. 3 in the driveway at the same time. No idea to type but 3 18" long snakes together. The same week the UPS man found 2 large (he said 5') black snakes in our driveway.
At work last week a couple came to the station and asked if we could help them. His pet ball python 'escaped' and was loose in the car. It crawled under the carpet in the back seat. So we disassembled the car until the snake was found. Dang I don't like snakes!!!!!!
Its that time of year. And what a year its turning out to be.
I keep dreaming of snakes.
Worst thing about the things is finding them. I KNOW they do good things for nature but. blech....let someone else mess with them

Keep the black snakes around. You won't have rodent problems, or copperhead problems. They don't like either.

I live on Jordan lake and we have many copperhead and I agree it doesn't sound like a copperhead. We have water snakes here and they love water and are colored a lot like a copperhead and they are very nasty and brazin fellows. Don't try to catch by hand just incase it is a copperhead. If you have kids you deffinetly need to get rid of it .
When we lived on our farm in Va. we found out that the best way to get rid of snakes is to have a pig or many pigs like we did.

According to someone from the state last year the number one cause of snake bites were to folks trying to kill them.

I thought you might give one of the Pentecostal snake handling churches a call but the closest to you is reportedly located in Morristown, TN - might be a little too far to come for such a small feller. 22 cal. rat shot in a pistol works every time and it shouldn't do any damage to the background. Also, you don't have to be the best shot to get the job done.

The baby red-bellied water snake looks a lot like a baby copperhead. Altho aggressive, and if handled can put a real stink on you, the red-bellied is not poisonous. Eats crayfish, frogs, toads, etc, but will also travel quite a ways over land. It, like the black rat snake, carry a foul smelling musk that they excrete when handled.
