Do any of you still can your own green (snap) beans or are Mary and I the only "dinosaurs" that still do this every year.

Today, we snapped and strung 1 1/2 bushels of green beans, and are in the process of canning them in quart jars in the pressure cookers. Looks like we'll have about 42 quarts when all is done. They sure do eat good in the winter!

We also plan to freeze peaches this week. Our trees are loaded and ripening fast. Seems like it all comes off at once.

Have a great week!

I used to help mom with snap beans and okra when I was a kid back in the swamp . The grocer handles all of that for me now . Sounds like fun though... Save a pint of them peaches for me.

Doesn't everyone??
I didn't know there were options...
We still can them, getting ready for the next round any day now, just waiting on the call. Since my mother sold the house I grew up in I have to 'outsource' the growing, but the farmer's market and some very good friends pretty much fill in the void; the latter without so much financial obligation! lol

Reggie,

Sounds like some delicious food... I think making up your own is always better than the mass-produced stuff. Unfortunately for me, my schedule only allows time for the occasional batch of strawberry jam and the like.

Not beans, but the in '06 and '07, Carla made pints of strawberry jam. None this year, though.

We do, usually around 40-50 quarts.
But not this year yet cause between the wild turkeys eating the plants as they sprout and the resident groundhog getting what the turkeys miss, we have no beans growing.
I've revived a small garden spot that's near the house instead of out in the field for a few rows of beans, so hopefully we will get some canned later in the summer.

Anyone want some young tender turkey or delicious groundhog???

Ken, I feel your pain!! I had a bit of a "coon issue" last year with my sweet corn. Sent 5 or 6 to better "hunting grounds!" I won't say how, as some think they are "cute>"

Try some shelled corn outside the garden for the turkeys and I recommend old 223 or 243 for the groundhogs if possible.

Good luck with the garden. We are freezing peaches today. Picked about a bushel and a half last evening and boy, are they good.

String beans are scarce here where we are this year due to the drought. The Farmers Market guys asked Mary $50 bushel!! Found some for $14/bushel and they are nice. Have put up 38 quarts so far.
