Type of Help Needed: Problem
Where: Main Site
Assigned To: froglips
Help Desk Status: Completed

I just started getting this VBulletin Message .........

"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

when I first launch my Home Page (NC Woodworker).

I have normally just got a list of the latest forum posts.

This just started this afternoon. I am running Internet Explorer.

Did I accidently change something or has there been a site VBulletin change?

Thanks,

Wayne

Nothing I'm aware of, but thats not saying anything

How about we start by getting a copy of the URL that you use when you open up the site?

Re: Strange VBulletin Message?

Not to get too technical, but perhaps the database has gone wonkers on you.

Actually, if you select a listing of today's posts, that's a search (by date range, not keywords, but still a search). For some reason, that search is coming up empty for you. Here's a suggestion - from the brown horizontal menu bar, select Other Links - Mark Forums Read. See if that clears things up.

Jim.

Here is the URL that I tagged as my homepage in IE....

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/s...earchid=827241

Bas.

That just seemed to mark all of my unread posts as read?

Thanks guys!

Re: Strange VBulletin Message?

Wow, my first guess was the winner! I gotta go get me a lottery ticket!

You somehow (or Microsoft somehow for you) bookmarked a specific "New Posts" snapshot.

While I'm not looking into the code, I do know this URL quite well.

The website generates a number, in your case, searchid=827241. Until there are more New Posts made, that number stays the same.

As of my the moment I'm typing this, that number is now 827442

My suggestion is to click on the logo at the top of the page. Then bookmark that page. That is our tried and true actual "Home Page".

While I don't personally condone doing the following, it is an option. You can bookmark the site so it opens into a New Posts search. That URL is: http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/search.php?do=getnew

I say I don't condone it, as there is no way I can promise that URL will work down the line.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Jim.

I decided to go the traditional route that you highlighted.

I guess I have just been lucky over the last few months with the unintentional search link!

As always I appreciate the quick response!

Interesting. Searches typically expire fairly quickly, if ours lasts months we have a pretty big cache for that. This is one of those things I'd want to look into, but probably forget as soon as I hit the submit button...I got conduit to bend

Re: Strange VBulletin Message?

Wow, this is wild. The database caches only your most recent "New Posts" search. Turns out that searchid is unique for the user + search. Which I mildly interesting to know.

One other tidbit, a getnew (New Posts) search is different than a Search for Thread. I tested it, and ended up with two records in the database, one for each search.

But, you only have one record for a getnew.

I'm not sure how Wayne got by for three months like this. I suspect that until he did a "New Posts" search, his old search was still valid.

I'm off to watch my Fish Hats march in the parade.

Well Bas, you sure have a con-du-it attitude
