The 'new posts' is not a forum in the sense of a category where posts 'live'. The post is categorized under 'other stuff' and can be referenced there, as you noted. You will find your thread by clicking 'new posts' when someone responds to your thread since your last visit. Since you created the post, it will not show up for you in 'new posts' until someone responds. It did, however show up for me because the system knows that I have not seen it yet. 
I hope that makes sense...but basically 'new posts' are only there if you haven't seen the post. Things that are listed in new posts for you will not be found there the next time you visit, even if you don't read them.

One other suggestion if you think that members are not responding adequately to a thread is to post a new addition to it yourself -- known in the forum world as a "bump" -- and that will force the thread to reappear on everyone's screens when they look for New Posts.
