This is a public saftey announcement...

He's my latest addition to the "idiot guide to saftey book". Wear your glasses. I was grinding down a lathe tool thought i was done took of the glasses and notice a part I wanted to touch up. Needless to say 2 days later her I am getting back from the eye doc after just having a scapel and small drill stuck in my eye to remove the metal and rust ring!

Not painful and everything "should" (always hate to hear should from the doc) heal back up fine but right now vision in that eye is a bit blurry.

Even though I hear it all the time remember what Norm says ...

there is is no more important safety rule than to wear thesesafety glasses.

You can now resume your regularly scheduled programming..

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

This is really close to those "one more cut" stories that often end in injury.

Hope your blurry vision goes away in a few days.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

We hope you have a clear and quick recovery, Patrick. A sad lesson, but a lesson learned, I'm sure. I can recall many times while managing the construction of a huge R&D facility in Research Triangle Park seeing idiot workers running a hand-held grinder with sparks running everywhere and not wearing mandatory eye protection. We had to find their forman and put them on notice for failure to wear their PP gear all too often. It never ceased to amaze me.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

Glad you're ok, Patrick. BTDT, 'cept mine was cutting a muffler off my car.
The vision "should" clear up in a day or two. The rust ring will go away eventually. Mine took several months, but no ill-effects now.
Good luck,

You got that right... they don't call em safety glasses for nothing. Like wood stain - they are not lying.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

Patrick,
Thanks for the reminder, I hope your vision straightens out soon!

I just switched back to contacts and I find myself forgetting to wear my safety glasses. This will sit in the back of my brain and remind me.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

This is a good opportunity to share some info...

If you ever think that you have gotten a metal sliver in your eye, go immediately to an eye doctor (not the emergency room). If you can see someone the same day as the the incident, chances are that they can easily pluck the sliver out - no rust and no scapel.

If you wait to see if it goes away (it wont), removal is more difficult, more painful, and the recovery more extended.

Not all safety glasses will totally protect your eyes. Back when I owned my machine shop I would get a sliver in my eye (from porting heads) about once every 6 months. It came in from the gap between the bottom of the glasses and my cheek.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

It can't be said enough -
Safety equipment must be worn to be effective.
We all take chances and so often we get away with them.

Glad it wasn't more serious, sorry it happened at all. Best wishes for a rapid and total healing.
I know my guys get tired of hearing me bark safety at them. And they take great glee when they get to bark it back at me - we all slip up. I HATE getting caught by them. But I thank them heartly every time they do. I'm not special. Bad things happen to me just like anyone else.

Don't take safety warnings personally - just take them to heart.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

Thanks for the reminder. Always be careful. Happened to me about 20 years ago. I was outside working on a aluminum boat consule on a windy day. After drilling a couple holes I bent over and the wind blew a tiny splinter into my eye and I had glasses on. If you think you got metal in your eye do not wait. Go to the eye doctor ASAP.

Patrick - Sorry to hear about your mistake and hope you heal completely and quickly.

It only takes an instant to make a lifelong impact. I'm glad you got a learning experience and were considerate enough to post here.

Re: Another reminder to wear your glasses

The eye seems to be good to go now. Thanks for all the support! I noticed I can't seal the gap between my respirator and glasses no matter what I did but I changed to putting the respirator on after the glasses and that seems to work better. I'm hoping that works if not I'll have to go to a full face respirator. Haven't had much shop time since the little shop help was born last week

Patrick,

Great to hear that your eyesight was not impacted and we are all sure that you'll be more cautious in the future. And congratulations to you and LOYL on the new
Shop helper!
