I finally got rid of my original router table. It was two saw horses, a piece of plywood with a hole for the bit, a router screwed to the bottom of the plywood, a 2X4 with a notch for the fence and two clamps to hold the fence down. Can't do anything with my new I could not do with the old one. I will say the top stays flatter.
This is the second post that I have read today that prove the adage "Simpler is better"

In looking at your pic's, I could not help but notice your
RAS. From what I can tell, it looks exactly like mine. My
read out has long since gone by the way side but the saw
still works fine. Mine is @25-30 years old, I think. Can't
remember that far back.

I just got the up-grade offered by Emmerson Electric Co.
and they sent me a whole new table top along with the
blade guard. Looks like a brand new saw now. All Free.

Got that RAS 20+? years ago & never got to set it up in my old shop. DRO tape failed right after I got it & it was replaced but I haven't even put a battery in it in years. The arm is just swung out of the way to make the table more accessible. I'm just now getting this shop set up (see my album) & mostly use the Miter Saw & tablesaw. Hope to get back into it soon.

Any comments on the brilliance or sheer stupidity of trying it?

Steve,
Monty has detailed photos of one he made in his gallery. Here's the link and a photo with the planer swung up:
