About a year and a half ago Woodwrangler gave me a vise that had been given to him. It has been sitting on the floor of my garshop since then. It was painted a pale green (sage) color, but the paint was chipping off and it just looked bad. I finally worked on it this weekend and cleaned it up and it is almost ready for a fresh coat of blue paint.

It is a quick release type, but beyond that I know nothing about it. Does anyone know anything about this vise?

I will post pics once it's painted.

Looks like a Richards-Wilcox.

Talking

Can't help you on the history trivia - but I think it is way cool. Why paint it? Throw some clear shellac on it to keep down the rust and it will look stunning as is.

I can tell you it was probably made in Aurora Illinois.

Another vote for the clear shellac!

Nice cleanup job on that!

I did a quick search and found several references on your vise, apparently well respected by some of the top wood workers. Richards-Wilcox is an old company started around 1880 and is known mostly for barn doors and hardware.

The pale green may have been the original paint.

The cast iron drop down half nut has been known to crack under too much pressure so be careful with it.
