I'm making progress on our new shop, working on it after work at the store. Here's our new bench.....

Re: New Work Bench
Hi Dave,
It's a piece of Quilted Maple plywood 3/4" thick that I doubled to make the bench 1 1/2" thick on a wood frame with two base cabinets on either end. You know the old saying the cobblers kids have no shoes...I sell and make things out of highly figured wood as a business but this is the first nice thing I've made for myself....

Re: New Work Bench
Gorgeous. Did I read your comment correctly? You doubled that quilted plywood. Translation: there is another piece hidden beneath that fine specimen???

Re: New Work Bench
You did read that right but I'm not that crazy...I used a different piece of 3/4" plywood as the under side. I'm saving the rest of the nice piece for another project.....

Re: New Work Bench
Pretty wood for a bench for sure!
What are the dimensions? Is it edge-banded with solid? What is the finish?
Yep, I'm pretty jealous of that beautiful top. I'd hate to do any work on it for fear of disfiguring it.

Re: New Work Bench
It's 9 feet long, 2 feet wide, I left the plywood edges cause I liked the way the plys looked. I finished it with 4 coats of Helmsman Satin exterior poly.

Re: New Work Bench
Nicely done!
One often sees guitars with a quilted maple top. So I was wondering how much a 14"x10" chunk of 1 1/2 " thick curly maple weighs?

Re: New Work Bench
Wow that is nice. Do you sell figured plywood at your store? I have no idea where to buy nice sheet goods like that.

Re: New Work Bench
Unfortunately I don't have the space to sell plywood / sheet goods at our store but I can get some if there was a need. I do have some very nice quilted and curly veneers and some 8/4 curly maple that would be great for guitars. There are a lot of variables that effect the weight of a given piece of wood but just to give you an idea I weighted a piece of curly maple that measures 8/4 x 16" long x 13"wide and it weighed 12.5 pounds.

Re: New Work Bench
Ah, so did you "make" your own figured plywood by putting veneer on regular plywood for that? I guess that would make more sense than buying a sheet of figured plywood.
