OK, I am building a new shop, is should be 70 x 28 with a garage door at one end. It will also double as the support for the walls of our new house. Yes, this is a basement, full daylight on two sides and will be shop and working garage as there is also a garage on the main level that will be for parking.

We have started the task of clearing the lot so now I am willing to start sharing the progress.

This is also somewhat of a gloat because we had a lot of large old white/red oaks that had to make way for the house and I got a mill to saw it for 1/2 the product. I am going to get a LOT of lumber!

Second load of lumber to the Kiln

This is the second load to Bee Tree, the first today and the second load is ready to go in the AM. Man this stuff is heavy. I should end up with over 1000 BF dried, and maybe about 600 more green to air dry. This trailer is 12' long.

I have no specific plans for the shop area. Right now it is just the basement, but will have a garage door at one end.

I do plan to use the lumber in the house for finish/trim. That's why I am going to the trouble of kiln drying most of the 4/4. I have widths from 4" to some as wide as 12", mostly about 8". I'm excited.

This is what was left over from the two kiln loads. I will sticker and air dry this batch. There are several 4x4s and 2x4 in there as well.

This is to give you some perspective on the size of the stumps we hauled away. They gave the logger's little bulldozer fifty fits.

John,

You mentioned BeeTree Hardwoods in Swannanoa for drying your lumber -- they are good guys and do KD work for some of our local sawyers here in the Asheville area (e.g., Mountain Sawyers, who I deal with) -- it sure looks like you hauled a bunch to them and I'm sure you will be pleased with the results.

Broke ground today. The pad for the basement is nearly complete and weather permitting, footers will be dug tomorrow. The temp pole for power is installed and inspected. Just waiting for it to get hooked up and the water meter was located today.

The near end and right side of the basement will be full daylight, the left side needs about 4-6 feet of fill.

John,

While I realize you are placing a slab for the shop, have you considered putting in trenches in the slab to carry power and dust collection duct for your tools so it would all be out to the way and below the floor? Now is the time to consider doing it!

Finally got around to bringing in the pile that will air dry. This stuff is HEAVY.

By the way, the Bruce stuff on the left is natural maple, 3/4 TG, prefinished, 2 1/4 wide.
Got that stuff at a local salvage for 2.50/square foot. Really pretty stuff.

Temporary power today. When I saw this crew pull up I thought that this was a rather large crew to hook up three wires. Turns out they swapped out the transformer for the next bigger size. I guess they found out I have a table saw.

I don't expect to see this again.

Doug footers for the basement today, water meter is in. Progress! We dug the basement last Tuesday but had a torrential rain that evening. It took the rest of the week for the ground to dry enough to get back in and dig the footers.

Footers poured today.

The first time I posted a picture like this, there was no way to see how big this is, so I had my buddy in this one for scale.

The garage is on the first level and has a bunch of steps in the footer.

Finally finished, and none too soon, it started raining immediately.

Starting the basement walls

Now it's starting to look like we are building something, not just playing with dirt.

The first course is the hardest.

About 80 blocks down, 1920 to go.

That is going to be a nice shop as well as a home.
What will be the ceiling height in the basement?
My ceiling in the shop is 10 ft, except at the steel support beam and makes handling 4x8 sheets easy.

Later,
Albert

The height is just 8 feet, but the floor trusses will be clear span. The entire ceiling will be 8 feet.
