Mobile Clamp Rack

There was a thread a while back on clamp storage and it reminded me to organize mine.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Joe,

Good job of getting all the clamps into one (mobile) spot. A clamp rack is on the short list of projects for me too. I was thinking along the lines of Norm's clamp rack. Is there anything you like / don't like about what you built? Any suggestions?

Ray

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Had an A frame, but it proved top heavy and took up more floor space. This one holds 30 Bessys with the weight lower to the floor and is 18X24. These cheap castors are a bit cranky (BORGs) on carpet; I would will use better ones later. The upper box holds odd size i.e. Merle band clamps etc.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Nice job Joe, but you will soon find that it only half the size it should be. Doesn't matter what size you start with, it seems to shrink. The most expensive real estate in my shop is my NYW style clamp cart. More bucks per square foot than any other spot. PS, Thanks for making cars for Toys For Tots program.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Wow! That's a pretty cool design, Joe!

(I can see where the overall weight may demand some heavier casters.)

With most of the weight (clamp heads) at the bottom, I bet it isn't too top heavy, eh?

Nice work!

Wayne

The A frame was top heavy? Is that because the heads were up top?

Would love to see some closer pics of how you have them laid out in the bottom if you would. Rolling clamp storage has been on my mind for a long time.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

I like the "A" frame. Mine is low so no danger of tipping. I stack the clamps like I grab them- head down and by the bar rather than a handle. I can grab 2 - 3 at a time that way. This is the prototype- I was waiting for a nibble from a WW mag before I built the final version. No bites so am still using the prototype. I like it alot!

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

That's a nice design Alan. I had a Woodcraft metal A stand for a couple of weeks.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

I'm looking at the A-frame clamp rack simply because I have a mish-mash of different types and sizes of clamps accumulated through years of unplanned purchasing. It's been whatever balance I could strike between what the project needed and what the budget would support.

The result is a variety of spring clamps, pipe clamps, bar clamps, etc so I need accomodations for various lengths and sizes. I'm thinking the A-frame offers a lot of "bang for the buck" in terms of size versus actual space to hang clamps.

thoughts?

Did you buy the NYW plans or just wing it? I am looking to build something similar if not that one.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Hi Alan. I like your design. Are those box joints in 2x6's for the bottom?

Why, yes they are. Good catch. I was just messing around and thought those would make a very strong joint with just glue.

Alan,

Box joints on a clamp rack... I think you do better work by accident than I do on purpose.

Sorry Travis, I didn't see your question earlier.

This is the one I had and the heads wanted to be on top.

There's a spacer centered between the heads. A strip on the bottom to tilt the clamp and a crossbar higher up with dowels spaced to keep the arms separate.

Re: Mobile Clamp Rack

Nice work Joe! That looks like a very functional build. I need one of those. Will you be storing traditional F-clamps, and if so, how did you include that into your design?
