Just a Peek of the shop over-haul!

I wanted to start showing you the shop overhaul I am doing. I did not get any before pictures (I would have been embarrassed) I used a slat wall system out a WW magazine and have started making movable storage bins and tool holders. Here is one for my Bailey hand planes (they are being refurbished slowly) It sits right above where my bench will go, I'm not sure if I like the proportions of it yet though, it does seem a bit large, I will have to wait until the bench is in place to see if it works or, if I need to scale it down. Have a blessed day friends.

Re: Just a Peek of the shop over-haul!

If there are any suggestions on how to improve it let me know. I am going to line the bottoms with felt. And I do have all the parts, just not on the planes right now. At the top are to Stanley 66, two infill planes, beside it, Bailey 7-3, a 110, and the famous Sougard hand plane I found in Iraq, I'm looking forward to cleaning that bad boy up.

Re: Just a Peek of the shop over-haul!

It does seem kind of large, but as many planes as you have, I don't see how you could make it smaller...... It looks good overall. How far do you have it tilted out from the wall? I really wouldn't mind making one myself so keep us updated if you would please.

I have some but haven't tried it and don't know if it would work for this, but have you considered flocking instead of the felt?

That's a great idea! Is there any way you could build it at a sharper angle, keeping it closer to the wall? You might have to put some type of cleat system to secure the planes. I do like the idea and may have to borrow it in the near future!

Travis, I was thinking of using flocking but I have never used it before. Does it hold up well?

Nelsone, I was thinking of that too, maybe making some kind of rare-earth magnet under-layment and making the angle sharper, it might work. I will have to play around with it. thanks for the advice friends.

What about making some storage behind it? Either a flip top or access through one end.

Re: Just a Peek of the shop over-haul!

Micheal this is a cabinet that I have admired quite a bit. In fact I have a picture of it in my shop and plan to build something like it. It incorporates a plane till similar to what you are building.

Re: Just a Peek of the shop over-haul!

That is DEFINITELY a cabinet. Now I am going to have to reactivate my FWW online membership to see the details.

Michael, I haven't used the flocking yet, but several have. I believe it is supposed to hold up well, but I don't know. It is supposed to be pretty easy to use.

I've used the flocking several times and it's easy to apply to almost any shape. Use tape to mask off where it doesn't go. I'm clueless on toughness/longevity, but I think you could add additional layers as needed.
