Re: Homemade air filter

Filter material discussion; Penn State Industries used to sell 5 micron and 1 micron filter felt so that we could make our own bags, replacing the cloth ones that came with the cheap DCs. My furnace filter is a $40 paper thing that is pleated about 4" deep. I worked around clean rooms at one time, and a thick filter(12") was what they used. So this got me to thinking I could buy some more 1 micron felt and build a better longer lasting furnace filter----washable(maybe)

Take your car air filter for instance, it uses pleated paper that's 1" deep. Shop vac filters too. If we bought the 1 micron felt it would be easy to build a filter for the shop and put this in front of a fan like this forum is showing. I would pleat it maybe 2"---the idea being to get filter area.

Re: Homemade air filter

Michael:

Woodsmith 95 is from 1994, so the air filter products out today were not out then (for the most part). Secondly, WS does not generally do tool comparisons.

Nice to know I am not the only one who saves "ancient" copies of Woodsmith etc. A lot of my upcoming shop projects including the air cleaner have their origins in my "library"

Old Issues

Glenn:

I keep most of my mags. I have every issue of FWW, Shopnotes, and almost all WS. I have some random others (Wood, American WW, WW Journal, etc.) I refer to the often.

Re: Homemade air filter

Unfortunately, most shop made filters don't get the particles that do the most damage to your lungs. You will need a V -Bank Mini Pleat Air Filter. I bought mine from Grainger several years ago. Paid about $40 for a pack of two (12" X 24") several years ago. Now they are about $40 each. When using furnace filters, as far as your lungs are concerned, you might as well use hog wire.
