DC Closet

Today I reached the point is shop construction where it was time to hang the DC closet door. I have insulated the closet in an effort to cut down on the drone of DC and thumping of compressor. The door was an exterior door that the glass was missing from and hung in reverse so that weatherstripping is on the inside, this helps in blocking noise and I needed it to swing the other way anyway. To make a sound baffle in the opening I used 1/2 inch fiberboard (Cellotex) with the openings staggered so that the air has to take a somewhat convoluted route on the way out. When all was done to my pleasant surprise the sound control worked well. The cellotex will be painted and covered with white perforated hardboard. We won't talk about how I ended up with a needing a new exterior door on the very first night I moved into my new house last June, let us just say my house now has an electronic door lock on the back door and I am still picking up bits of glass in the utility room now and then.

Re: DC Closet

Looks great to me. Are you concerned with heat buildup in there, or does the DC take care of that for the compressor?

With the compressor running intermittently and the CFM that the DC will be moving I am not too concerned about heat build up but since closet will also be housing utility tub and water lines I will be leaving the door ajar in colder weather when I am not in the shop and DC is not circulating warmed air from the shop. Broken water lines are about as much fun as breaking windows to gain entrance to your own house !!!!

Re: DC Closet

Looks great. You will like having the air compresser and DC out of the way and not having to here them running. I have my air compresser behind the shop and I can hardly here mine run.

Re: DC Closet

looks good Glenn. I have the same DC. I used 5 inch Galvanized HVAC pipe to go up through the ceiling. The Pipe slips right on the DC. what are you going to do?

The shop only has a scuttle attic so I will be running DC piping on the wall at ceiling level but I will be using 5" HVAC pipe transitioning down to 4" PVC for the two branch lines when I reach that stage of construction. You might be interested to know that the March issue of Wood magazine has tests of 15 under $400 DC's and the 50-760 came out on the top of the pack. I always like it when a purchase decision I make is validated by others. I bought the Delta 8 months ago on closeout at a Lowes in NJ and saved a ton of money. With the 1 micron bag and the impeller mounted between the bags eliminating the velocity robbing elbow used on some of the other machines I think the Delta is a real winner.
