On Saturday July 12, some of the finest woodworkers in North Carolina met for a meet and greet in Charlotte North Carolina for what has been called the Charlotte Shop Crawl 2008.
The gathering was the organizational brainchild of Mr. Doug Robinson who after 27,456 posts, was able to arrive at a singe date that would accomodate nearly eveyone. Ok, I might be exaggerating a little and the total post were only 26, 000 but the effort none the lest was herculean.

Our weather cooperated nicely with a sunny and warm day. Our group assembled in Mathews, NC for the Kickoff.

We started at Pete Qs residence ( Pete) who is currently working on bandsaw boxes. His shop is a dedicated two car garage with a very nice layaout.

Next stop was Nelsone (Ed). Ed's shop was a dedicated 1 car garage but he did have the added benifit of a nearby refrigerator and an overhead TV. Ed has been woodworking for over 10 years now and is currently working on a flag box. He also has some vey big dogs.

Next stop was Shunevernol (Mike). Mike has the advantage of a house addition buit for his shop including a nice pergo floor and air conditioning. Mike also has some drop dead gorgeous equipment including a sawstop tablesaw with an aircraft carrier extesion surface. His grizzly planer could also land small aircraft. It was very nice and I was suprised by Mike's involvment in woodworking to be only a few years. He is really into this stuff and his peanut butter delights were fantastic.

Next on the list was Pete Mohr (Pete). Pete has a one car garage shop plus and indoor area for his fine work. Pete does a lot of scroll work with very fine detail and is currently working on a hand carving. We were all inpressed with the level of art he adds to woodworking.

We all next headed for lunch at Wolfman's pizza where we had some fantastic pizza. I have no picture of this event since I was much too busy eating which is my one of favorite things to do after woodworking. I saw pictures being taken so maybe someone can add one.

Next we moved onto Woodwrangler (Jeramy and his son Tyler). Jeramy has a nice dedicated two car garage with epoxy floor and more gagets than you can shake a stick at. My favorite was the power feeder for his goliath (thats the size of it not the namebrand) bandsaw. The motor on his power feeder is bigger than the motor on my bandsaw. I guess I have motor envy. Jeramy is currently working on some kids rocking horses and an end table. The cookies were top notch as well.

Next stop was Tdhetrick (Todd) shop who also has a semi dedicated two car garage shop. Todd is working on a computer driven router table that he demostrated to us. I has the capability of routing out designs driven by a computer program. It was prett cool stuff to see and hear that thing work. Todd is currently still working on the system to make it even better than it already is.

The fianll stop was at gordonMt (Mark) your humble reporter. My shop is a semi dedicated 1 car garage. I have no picture since I could not host a photo snap at the same time but I'm sure someone out there has a photo to add. I am currently working on creations that make my shop easier and better to use. I am also working on a baby crib and highchair as an expectant new grandfather.

Some fun facts concerning our Charlotte shop crawl.

Two states, 6 counties and 9 cities were represented by the 20 people who attnded.

47.8 miles were traveled from start to finish. This of course does not include the travel time to get to th first stop or the return. Our bretheren from the Raliegh area would increase that number greatly.

Over 185 combined years of woodworking experince was present at this crawl.

Over three dozed cookies were consumed and several sodas.

Overall it was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend anyone who has not done one of these to do so. It was nice to see so many people working with wood in much the same way as I do and aslo to see what I might accomplish if I keep with this.
All in all a great bunch of guys and a great time was had by all.

your reporter

Mark Gordon

Great report Mark, and nice looking pictures. It's interesting to see how we all manage to do woodworking under such different circumstances.

Fantastic reporting Gordon. Looks like a great time for the whole bunch. Did anyone in the Raleigh crew bring any cookies back? . Great job Doug!

Now, when should we be thinking about a DOA (Durham, Orange, Alamance) shop crawl?

BAS ,
Yes different conditions but sometimes also very similar. I was suprised to see all the converted garages much like my own. Very eye opening.

WoodArtz,
We adopted the moto of the armed services, no cookies left behind.

I am glad that the shop crawl went well, I know I thoroughly enjoyed the Raleigh edition. If you ever give up the chemical biz, you could easily land a job as a journalist Mark, great job of reporting, I love the statistics

Glenn,
The way the chemical business is going, I take comfort in your comments.
Thanks

Looks like a great day was had by all. Wish I could have made the trip but had to paint and finish some remuddeling for the grandbaby's room. I make one of the shop crawls hopefully someday.

Great summary of the day in pictures ... glad we got a complete group photo!

One correction ... that's my nephew, not my son (Tyler!) ... haha, how old do you all think I am? (j/k)

All I can say is WOW!

What a blast! Seeing how each woodworker setup their space was just so enlightening.

Meeting so many people in person was equally grand. Says so much about the nature of our hobby and the kind of community that has grown here.

Thanks to all the hosts for opening their shops up to the masses! I still wonder how you all keep your shops so clean :-p

Lastly, way to go Doug! You pulled of a wildly massive feat of organized cat herding.

Jim

It's the Boiled Linseed Oil. That's how Jeremy manages to keep looking young. Just a light coat every morning. Still not convinced? I'm really 52!

Great reporting. I had a blast seeing how others adapt to their space that they have been allotted for woodworking. Some really great looking shops and all super people.

Here's the link to my Shop Crawl album if anyone is interested:
http://www.ncwoodworker.net/pp/showgallery.php?cat=1257

I enjoyed the day very much. I was particularly impressed with the fact that we were welcomed into a wide spectrum of homes but the only question or concern on everyone's mind seemed to be, 'Whatcha workin' on?' Nobody cared about how ornate or humble the homes may have been. The hosts were appreciated solely for their varying WWing abilities and their willingness to share them. That was very refreshing to me in this materialistic world we live in.
