I would concur, based on the leaf samples. Nyssa sylvatica matches it very well. It is a hard wood and would be perfect for turning. It also has spectacular fall color...of course not after turning

Persimmon? Its could also be live oak, because it is about time for them to drop their leaves and renew them.

After reading about it, I'd have to think it is black gum too. However, the pictures of black gum look like beautiful trees .. and mine are just these poor little excuses for trees buried among the heights of many Sweet Gum trees that tower above the rest stealing all of the sunlight.
