Re: What is it.

Can you post bigger pics?

Can you tells us about the grain structure (open or closed)

It could be a few woods from the pics you are showing. Chestnut, alder, perhaps even Elm.

Thanks,

John

Re: What is it.

I'm surprised that an old roll top would be something other than oak, but that isn't oak.

Re: What is it.

Poplar heartwood? The colors of the heartwood can vary from browns to reddish, especially old growth cut from large trees.

Re: What is it.

That appears that it could be red gum. I have a few pieces that came out of some old cabinets from a drug store. I also had some experience with red gum when I worked with a millwork co. The color and workability you described leads me to think it could be the same.

Re: What is it.

Have had a lot of replys, including someone from the marina said it could be teak, but I still have no idia. If I can go to Hickery on the 27-28, I will bring the pieces with me.

Re: What is it.

Along the lines of wood ID, I found this article pretty interesting:

Re: What is it.

hard to tell from the photos. I would guess a low to medium density hardwood.

[revised]
