Type of wood??

I just ask a qustion on another thread about how BigMike finished a Bocote bowl without the light wood turning dark. I said I was working with a piece of Wenge and was told Wenge was all dark. Can anyone tell me what type of wood this is?

Thanks!

Re: Type of wood??

It looks like Wenge, but most of the Wenge I've seen is much darker. Is it very open grained? It has more of a grain pattern like Bocote, but it's a little dark for that.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Type of wood??

It is great looking wood and I want to preserve all the grain contrasts I can!

Re: Type of wood??

Probably a water-based polyurethane would give the least color change. Anything oil based is going to darken both the dark and light grain and may lessen the contrast between them.

That's definitely Wenge http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/person...pics/wenge.htm

But you can easily see how someone (me ) could think it looks like Bocote
