Re: Sycamore
Pete, I do believe in this instance it can all be blamed on WGD and you are all clear from any further heckling.
Now to find the pot of gold to get some of this lumber!

Re: Sycamore
Alan, I think there is a little over 200 BF in that big log. Some will be quartered and some flat sawn - Scott Smith wants about 500 BF of wide 7/8 ~ 1" flat sawn for wainscoting.
I was mainly interested in the sycamore from this site because it looks like it may have some mineral streak and ambrosia. I really like it when lumber is unique. This and the other load I picked up a few weeks ago should make up about 1500 BF. Since it all came out of the same lowland woods creek bed, it should be pretty consistent.
Jack (Saw4U) and I have been grabbing some real nice logs off this small tract that's being logged by a small family run logging outfit. I know the logs are good off this site, I've sawed a few already and so has Jack. Jack picked up one of the best SYP logs I've seen in a while.and I left another one just like it there today for Jack to pick up. Even though I had room for it on the trailer and it was hard for me to leave. Jack really wanted it, so I didn't want to take it out from underneath him, Jack's a pretty cool guy - you know...
I left some nice maple there for you to Jack and a fairly decent a hackberry, some oak, something else (I can't remember). You should have no problem filling up your tailer again with some #1 logs. I like it when us small guys get the good stuff, and the #2 and #3's go to the commercial mill, don't you?
Thanks

Re: Sycamore
Nice looking load of sycamore there Jeff. Its nice that you and Jack have got a good place to get good logs. Good ones are hard for us small guys to find anymore.

Re: Sycamore
Ivey you got that right, it really is getting hard. What blows my mind is I really can't believe the amount of logs that get exported. How they can put American logs on a boat, ship them across the big pond, saw them there, process the lumber, ship it back here on another boat and sell it cheaper than we can, I'll never know.
How do they do that ?
Thanks

Re: Sycamore
Jeff,
If just exporting gets you going, this will really get your blood pressure up there. I work in the shipping industry (engineer) and a friend of mine just passed this on to me the other day. There is a Chinese company(I believe) that is picking logs up in the New York/Newark area going out to international waters, sawing the logs up (throwing scrap overboard if not usable) and then shaping/finishing the wood into various products! Then they come back into port with finished product and pick up the next load of logs and begin the process all over again!

Re: Sycamore
I finally got time to start sawing Sycamore today - yep it's still like I remember - pretty. The logs that came off this tract are a little more ambrosia marked than the load we had at the picnic. I'm QS'ing sawing it @ 4/4 thick to get ready for Scott to kiln dry it. Let me know if your interested in any - I'm sure it'll be after the first of year and I'll be a good member and post an ad in the next few days.
Thanks

Re: Sycamore
Jeff, you can see the end tables and coffee table John made from the last load of QS Sycamore I bought from you in his thread about Matching end tables. I am still trying to find a place to store more, but I definitely want some more - and maybe I can keep some of it this time for me to use Not that I can complain about having those gorgeous tables to look at on a daily basis.

Jeff, the QS 8/4 I got from you several weeks ago is outstanding. It will be used in my next rocker. If this new stuff is similar I want MORE...don't know where I'll put it, but more is good!!! Are you going to do 4/4 or 5/4???.
Rick Sina ( came over today) wants a country table for a cabin and I'm thinking this would make a great table. The legs would need 16/4, and 5/4 for the apron, 6/4 for the top. Think big, man...some 16/4, some 8/4, some 6/4. We can always re-saw.
Keep on truckin'...you're doing great.
Don
