Welcome back, Dennis! Hope all is well and life is good in Charlotte.
Here's a thread from a while back about moisture meters that may help: moisture meter reviews

HTH,
Roger

Dennis,

If you've relocated to the Charlotte area, you should update your user profile to correct your County, City and zipcode information. There are many times that users rely on that information to find fellow members in their area. We have many members in the Charlotte area, so you've found more woodworkers.

In the 'for-what-its-worth-department', I have an inexpensive thermometer in my shop that has an RH meter built into the bottom face of it and it gives me a rough idea of my shop conditions to alert me (visually) to turn on my dehumidifier when it gets too high. You might check around for something like that.

Same here, I think I got it at Walmart.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

This is an area I deal with a fair amount in my real job. We just developed a hygrometer with a very fast response time for some of the medical device development work we do. Lots of options out there from $10 to $10,000, datalogging, alarms, etc.

A DIY version is pretty simple. Fill a shiny metal mixing bowl with water and add a few ice cubes. Stir with a thermometer and when you see the first fogging (condensation) on the outside of the bowl check the temp on the thermometer. That temp is the Dew Point. This is the temperature where the air would be saturated with water vapor(100%RH) if the temp dropped and the humidity level stayed constant. Go here: http://www.met.fsu.edu/orgs/wxstation/calculator.html
and enter the Dewpoint temp and the temp of the room. RH will be displayed.
If you're handy with a calculator there are 4 or 5 formulas you can do to reach the same number.

Re: relative humidity meter for site

Ditto Mark's referral to Professionalequipment.com. They have an Extech temp and humidity datalogger kit that logs both RH and temp - storing up to 16K readings - for about $150.00

Item T505-2275 - I've been thinking about obtaining one for my wood storage.

Radio Shack-$30. Remote sensor. Working well in my kiln right now.
