Rob lives by Old Fort? I love that town - every time I'm up that way I pull off the interstate and cruise around - something about that town appeals to me but not sure what it is.

Thanks

The boards are 6' long, just right for cutting into chair blanks etc.

You have a problem ? I don't even build stuff and here I was toting away spalted maple ( again ) sycamore ( again, but 2 book matched pieces this time ) , some awesome super-wide cypress and some nice wide elm ....never even seen elm before , no clue what I am going to do with it, but man was it purdy !
Kept walking away, walking back, drooling, touching, someone would say " you know you want it " and boom ...into the pile it went

....and I don't regret a bit of it

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

It was fun stuffing my Camry -- only had to cut one board that was about 7' long -- sure is some mighty nice maple -- here is a link to the May 2008 Wood Run thread and to the new Gallery where I uploaded some pics...

Jeff, I live about 45 miles beyond Old Fort. That is a fun little drive up the "hill" to get to Black Mountain when you're hauling about 600 BF of lumber behind a 3.0L V6 in a Ranger truck like I did after last year's picnic! Come see us some time!

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

The way I figure it is - I counted 1300BF when I loaded the trailer. After I loaded the trailer I measured 1600 BF. When the trailer was empty I accounted for about 950 BF - man do I suck at counting or what - even Granville county math isn't adding up

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

Two guys go to SC to buy watermelons. They buy them for 1 dollar each. They sell them for a dollar each when they get home. One asks the other what went wrong, they didn't make any money. The other replies "It's simple, we need a bigger truck." Maybe the problem is the size of your trailor.

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

Nope I know exactly what it was - I counted 5/4 for 4/4 - seeing I had a lot of 5/4 and a little 3/4 but mostly 4/4 I figured oh heck I'll just count it as 4/4 but the 3/4 I think was counted as 0/4 because it was well 3/4. That's besides the point that I counted 9/4 as 8/4, 8/4 that I counted as 8/4 and 4/4 I counted as 4/4 - I don't remember what I did with the 6/4 but I think I counted it as 4/4 because it was to little for 8/4. I remember now yep that was it - it's that orange card that only had 4 and 8/4 listed. Then there was my tape - see its old and the numbers are not all the readable plus I didn't have my glasses on and that's why the calculator didn't work... Yep that was it alright Anyways I'm now convinced that Granville county math is adding up. It's amazing all those years in school and those college degrees but nothing beats good ole Granville county math. Another thing... It's amazing what you'll believe if you think about it long enough.

Seriously guys - I had a great time and I really do appreciate you taking time out of your day to come to the lumber run - just jerking your chain a little

Thanks

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

Jeff... all I know is that your Granville Co. math keeps me buying lumber from you. Don't think about it to hard..it hurts and is no fun. Just keep producing good quality lumber at a good price and I'll keep buying it from you.
Nuff said......

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

So that's what it is called! I sort of do the same thing when I estimate IT projects. I sort of run down what I think needs to happen, and how many man days it will take. Just pure gut feel. I write that down. Then I do the scientific approach, all sorts of estimating spreadsheets and patterns and blah blah stuff. Out comes a number. I take it to the client and they say it's too high! Then the Project Manager comes along and says it's too high! Then I reduce it until everyone grudgingly says OK...and that's usually the number I came up with in the first place.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I still have a project I need to finish before I can even start planing some of that lumber from last Sunday, so I gotta slow you down or you'll have another lumber run with stuff I want but don't have room for.

Poor working conditions - Fred your shop is one of the very few I felt comfortable in - Honestly. I've been in some shops that are so clean I wonder if anything actually happens in there. Give me a nice layer of saw dust on the floor to cushion my feet and lumber stacked here and there and I feel right at home. Please forgive my spit sanding technique - but hey it washed off didn't it?

Re: Raleigh Lumber Run 05/18/08

There were no "show off your shop scares" winners at this run - But FredP would not give easy - the same day he got beamed in the head with a board from the lumber run by sawduster, in his own driveway - Fred wins hands down
