(waves hand) you don't want cherry, oak will do (short pause) (waves hand again) lots of oak, quarter sawn oak is what you want.

Re: Pricing for cherry?

Here's what you would pay at the Hardwood Store of NC

http://www.hardwoodstore.com/lumber.html

This is rough sawn, probably not much wane and you get to go through the stack to pick what you want.

Re: Pricing for cherry?

Seeing as it is your GF grandmother, I would make her something with it. I think that would mean more to her than the money she could get from it. Especially if she is wanting to give it to you. A nice jewelry box, small table or a mantle clock would be enjoyed and cherished.

Re: Pricing for cherry?

Dave. i agree 100%. and we have already decided to do that no matter what. but we are definitely going to pay her. its more of a family fued happening i think. some of the family wants it for free but never lift a finger to help her anymore. we think shed rather give it to a near stranger (me) just to spite them.
these recents flood rains got the best of her. ruined the carpet in the basement and a few odds and ends down there. insurance wont cover it and no one is chipping in to help her. i know she could make enough selling some of the cherry and apple she has his old shop. so i want to help her and not just take it from her.

Well there you've found your payment. I know that you can handle the restoration. If it is a fair trade (to you), fixing her flooding problems would be better than the money you could give her. She wouldn't have to find someone to do the work and she would get someone that is very qualified and whom she can trust. Plus it would spite the gold-diggers having a "stranger" help out the "family" by taking care of it's Matriarch.

Re: Pricing for cherry?

$3 a foot would be $1200, that should buy some carpet.

Re: Pricing for cherry?

I agree with Dave, anything that you do to help her get her home back in order would mean alot more then the money. I have made some picture frame out of Cherry and my wife loves them - she likes them better the the R&W Oak ones that I have made - Maybe after you get the Cherry you could frame one of her favorite pictures with it

Re: Pricing for cherry?

I agree with you guys completely, but her living 4 hours away would make it hard to do that much work to her basement. I would actually enjoying rehabbing her basement for her. Its more than just carpet. 5 inches of standing water ruined drywall, some furniture and more. Im sure she would love a picture frame or a one of a kind piece of furniture, but thats not doing enough.
Thanks for the suggestions on pricing. Thats just what i was looking for.
