Exclamation Need wood

Do any of you have any experience with Western Cedar?
Opinions good, bad or otherwise are welcome. I have a
project that calls for cedar but, it seems, ERC is hard to
come by. I need it to be dried either Kiln or air. Not sure
of the board ft yet. Still getting a cut list together.

Also, going to need some WO soon. Same conditions as
above.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Woodrat.

Re: Need wood

Member "lrb150" had some nice looking eastern red cedar, you may want to contact him.

Re: Need wood

Western Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar are two different animals.

WRC usually has nice straight grain, is light but strong, bends (dry and steam) fairly easily. Can be easily found clear, free of knots. I used it to make a cedar strip canoe years ago.

ERC, is light also, but usually has a large amount of small, medium, and large knots, and likewise a squirrely grain pattern and can be almost brittle. It has a much deeper purple color when cut green, which then fades to reddish brown, except for sapwood which is usually white. It is best used for small boxes and closet and drawer linings.
