Lumber run May 31

I can't believe nobody's posted about this yet!

Another great lumber run in the usual spot (Harbor Freight parking lot), lots of pretty wood and friendly folks. Picked up some nice walnut, I can't wait for all my stuff to dry! Restacked it all today, added some straps to tie it all down, now it's just a matter of waiting. I'm not so good with that.

There was a pretty good turnout today, got a chance to meet Mac (skysharks), Jack (saw4you), Mike (Davis) and a bunch of others. Robert (sawduster) bought a BIG bucket of fried chicken to keep everyone fat and happy (grease stains all over the walnut....). And thanks to Todd (tv) for driving today. It's nice to have friends with trucks Although Scott (NCcroller) is abusing his power position, he made me bring a TURNING magazine to the run....now I got lathe stink all over my hands.

I learned something today - Travis can count! Hearing him call out the board feet as he put board after board in his pickup (117....121.....126 half...134....149). And then Jeff stuffing the truck afterwards with a few boards to help reduce the wind drag on the trailer. Good stuff...

Re: Lumber run May 31

I got there before you! Had the LOML with me and she had a different agenda for the rest of the day so we picked up some beautiful maple (Thanks, Jeff!!!) and talked with Scott for awhile. Nice seeing Sawduster, Rita and Dick again and nice meeting Jack. Didn't really socialize much due to previously listed excuse.

Now, off to Shearon Harris for some bass (the finny kind) fun!!!!

Re: Lumber run May 31

Thanks Bas brother for posting, and it was a pleasure to meet you.
You know this is the third lumber run that I have been to and it seems that everytime time runs out for me.
I never have enough time to just stay and hang out. Oh well maybe next time.
But what I have noticed is this. I meet new folks everytime, and while that in it's self is a pleasure. I believe it would be a bit less awkward if there where name tags of some sorts.
Some of us are kind of shy and breaking the ice by sticking your hand out and saying
Hello/Howdy
is a big step.
I believe if there where maybe a generic name tag that could be printed off of the site, would help.
Heck, maybe there is I just ain't found it .
I'm not one of those bashful kind of people. But some others might be. I want folks to know me and feel comfortable with approaching me. ( man I hope that this isnt sounding too wishy washy, )
Anyways that is why I put my mug up on/in my avatar, so you all would know me to see me.
Whew that was a mouthful.

Jeff,
thanks again lil brother. As always you da man, wish we didn't live so far away, got lots to talk about.
Jack , good meeting you, and thanks for the load of lumber. I left there with allot more than I really came for and probably spent too much to..

To everyone else that I had the pleasure of meeting hope to see you all again, and I'll try to stay longer.
Oh almost forgot, Mike Davis I forgot to grab that beautiful bowl made from that oak burl that you offered to me

Re: Lumber run May 31

It was good to see everybody again.

I got home around 5 dead tired, came in and rested a bit, drank a tub of water and then went back out to stack wood.

Of course I had to rearrange the shop and move a few things out. But, I got all the oak standing in the corner and strapped to the wall. By then I was too tired to move.

I'll have to stack the walnut this morning. I'm thinking I'll put it outside under the eve of the shop under the cypress. So, that means I have to unstack the cypress, move the walnut and stack the cypress back on top. I really need to move that wood anyway. Need to get the thick cypress on top for the shaving horses.

Re: Lumber run May 31

My first lumber run. Boy am I a happy camper. 100 BF of nice walnut stacked up and drying. Patience is not one of my virtues. Gonna be tough just looking at it for the next few months.

Thanks to Jeff and Jack, it is a wonderful thing that they do for us all especially w/ the $ of fuel these days.

Re: Lumber run May 31

Yep no doubt Dozer is "an" enabler I need to hire him as official lumber salesman... Dozer's famous words "You know you want it" BUT Owen299 (Dan Bowen) is the real enabler - although he didn't drive out to Raleigh - I met him in oxford at a friends forklift repair shop - he grabbed the first 75BF of maple and tossed a bunch of waxed maple turning blanks in the back of the truck and asked me to give them away. Guess what there was nothing left in the back of the truck or on the trailer - I noticed Jack's was clean too.

Thanks everyone for coming out - I had lots of fun.

Again we had lots of drive by's and Jack sold some walnut to one of them. There are a lot more woodworkers in Raleigh than I thought there was - I think Jack and I could just bring a trailer load full of lumber and a sign - sit in the HF parking lot and sell lumber all day long.

Now I just need to get some RO slabs out to Bas because I mis-read his request - brought 4/4 instead of 5/4

Thanks

Re: Lumber run May 31

Well I didn't buy anything but I sure had fun. I know some of you are thinking, you went to a lumber run and didn't buy anything? How is that possible? One the hardest things I have ever done. With enablers all around. It started with NC Scroller "loaning" his truck out to someone else, Bas just having to go again to get his fix. There I was caught in the middle. On top of that, NC Scroller attempts to ensnare Bas and drag him to the dark side with a catalog. Well, I got the bad end of that deal. The catalog is still in my house.

Glad I could provide some assistance and thanks to sawduster for the yard bird.

I still can't believe the wood wasn't S4S. Geez......You would think for $1.50 a BF it would be FAS and S4S....... What is the world coming to??

It will probably be a week or so, but I think I will have a planing party. Only a couple hundred board feet to joint, plane, straight line rip..... Anyone up for a planing party? Free wood chips for mulch!

Hmmm, don't really need wood chips, but a planing party sounds like my kind of party. If I don't have to travel for business next week, I might just meander over and give you a hand processing the stuff. With a 16" jointer, we can gang them up and run them 3 at a time
