Hello everyone,
As you all know I have a sawmill. I mostly saw other peoples logs, but lately I have been picking up a variety of logs from a logger (at a good price) when does not have a full load. So I thought maybe some of you may be interested, if not I will saw it, and put it under the pole barn to dry.
This is what I have in log form: soft maple=100 b/f (1.30 b/f)
hickory=1000 b/f (1.25 b/f)
sweetgum=400 b/f (.80 b/f)
pecan=150 b/f (1.50 b/f)
These are nice stright logs,lumber will be green stright off the mill.

Thanks, Ivey Pridgen

Seems that there is no interest .
maybe it's too high?
maybe I'm to far from most folks.
maybe I'm the new kid on the block.
maybe there's just not a need at this time.

Well anyway it sure is purdy!

about: 600 b/f hickory
300 b/f pecan
200 b/f maple
some pictures

Ivey,
The prices are great, I also run a sawmill in Raleigh. Has far as the hickory, you do not have any problems sawing that. The last one I cut I made three passes and took it of the saw. What is the key to sawing a hickory?

Thanks Jack

Ivey,
I wouldn't get totally discouraged ....seems to be plenty of takers of fresh cut lumber at a good price. My personal philosophy is to buy per project because as soon as I sspeculate and buy 4/4 I'll find something to make out of 5/4. Being from Wilm. I'm delighted to hear that we have a sawyer this close by. I'm sure I'll be getting in touch with you sooner or later.

Stephen

Hello Jack,
you know I have had other band mill folks tell me the same thing. One old timer told me last week that the best thing to do with hickory was to leave it in the woods!! I never have had trouble with it. Sawed about 600
b/f Sat. every board stright.. I use thick blades .049 that may help. Theres always stress in some logs, but thats with any wood, you just have to keep turning it, and take a skim cut.. Guides stright, sharp bands, good set, and I use water and pine- sol. Hope this helps.
BTW It helps if the logs are fresh.

Ivey,

I have a freind that told me the same thing. I am glad someone can saw it. I have hickory floors in my house. I had a guy call me to saw a hickory log after that bad wind storm we had and I told him that I could not saw it. Thanks for the information maybe I will give it one more try.

Thank Jack

Hickory is rough to cut. I use .042 x 1 1/4" bands with a 10 degree hook and set them good and low (.015 ~ .017). Take it easy on those wide boards, pour on the go go juice (water and joy dish washing soap) and you should be ok

Ivey, great looking lumber there, a productive Saturday and your prices are right in the ball park . Hang tight, it takes a little bit of time but soon enough you'll be back logged because you can't keep up. Enjoy it while you can.

Thanks

I would use an 8 degree and use a good lube. Less angle allows it to move through the wood with more bite.

I may be interested in some of your maple, if not all of it. I am not sure about the drying part though. How long would it have to sit in the garage before it would be usable? I am in Wilmington, and would love to find a place to pick up a little wood for a good price.
