So when they do these big deliveries to the group, can small timers get in for just a few boards? For eaxmple, 2 each of walnut, sycamore and maple 8/4 boards about 8" wide and 8' long would be a large order for me.

The 7' maple 2x8 I referneced earlier will provide the bodies for 4 instruments and take me a while to use up. My assumption is that while a sawyer might have had a better price on that board, a sawyer doesn't want to sell me just one board (and I don't blame him - not worth his while).

I have bought 98% of my wood from the sawyers, I also have the space available to store about 1,000 bd/ft in side. But there are just some special pcs. that you see at Klingspor or somewhere else such as rosewood for a jewelry box, or sapele, or purpleheart that you just need to have.
So far the only local sawyer I have dealt with is jeff, and he stands behind his product, he will also sell you one piece at the KD runs ( you should go to the next one, if you haven't been to one, it's a blast) if that's what you need. His prices are good and his measurements are generous. I am looking forward to seeing Jack (saw4you) soon for some air dried stock, and I have to make a trip down to see Ivey for some cypress and maybe whatever else he has. Jeff, Scott, Kyle, Ivey, Jack, Randy and the others have quality wood for a fair price, if they weren't fair they'd be out of business. It's not a large profit margin (if any at all) that they are working off of.

I understand that we buy when and where its convenient, and thats okay. But the whole point of this site is to support the woodworkers of this great state of NC. The woodworkers include any where from the guy working in his basement or garage all the way up to the stores selling us product. I hate to say it ( not really) but the BORGS are the worst thing out there for us. All that they are concerned about is the bottom line. If they feel that they can't make a large profit on something, they stop carrying it. There was a time when HD didn't carry appliances, now they do, what were they using that space for before ?

In the end, we should all support our local sawyers, hardwood stores, hardware stores, and tool stores, as well as our local craftsmen as much as we can. If we don't, they will all disappear and all we will have are borgs and their quality.

Well, I'm off the soapbox now.

Absolutely,

You put your order in on the site, Then pick your wood out on the day of, if you don't like the wood you're not obligated to buy. One piece or a hundred, mix or match, cash or check only.

They will let you buy as little or as much as you want. At least that is what I have seen in the past.

Well I look forward to participating in that in the future. I bought way more cypress than I needed bacause of a minimum. I have covered outdorr storage for quite a bit, but it is in a spot that is usually humid. The cypress was fine there, but other stuff less so. In the garage I can only keep a few boards out of the way.

I will have a lot of lumber to move and dry in the near future... I really have no idea how much I got them to cut down, but there are at least 7 white oaks of 2-4ft diameter, and others like red oak, persimmon, cherry, beech, poplar, ash, etc. I am not going to have the room to dry it all I will probably be offering up a tremendous amount to locals or trading wood for drying room

I guess I could get it all kiln dried

I went to the Rehab Center for Habitat just to look. They were selling reclaimed red oak with nail holes (previously floor joists) for $2 a board foot (sitting out in the rain). Seemed a bit high to me.

David,

I'd be happy to pass the comment along to the marketing manager at the ReStore.

How come??? I am sure there is a good reason, but I can't fathom why.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Chad that's awesome - I went back and looked at the thread (lumber run #5) http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=7068 . I really enjoyed those custom cut to order lumber runs. It would be cool to start up green lumber runs again. Let me pull some prices for various species together and I'll post them see if there is any interest. There is a lot I can offer since my mill is still parked out at the log yard.

Thanks
