Hot 'n Drying!

Due to a "desperate need" for some of the 1" cypress boards,(this was the lumber I picked up from Ivey at the picnic, and it was sawed on Friday before the picknic) I "broke into the kiln this afternoon and found the following:

5 layers down into the stack, the MC is 12%! That will come out tomorrow morning and be used this week. WOW! This was placed in the kiln on May 30th.

I'll be VERY interested to see if the middle of the stack is <20%MC tomorrow morning. If so, we'll pull the entire load and replace it with some more 7/4 stuff. After that comes some white oak, and I'm really interested to see how that turns out.

Yesterday afternoon at about 4 p.m., the inside temp was 136F. It was 97F outside.

This is exactly the result we were hoping for on this 1" stuff. It will reduce our drying time to 2 weeks of sunny weather and keep us supplied with lumber we can work with. We're pleased!

Re: Hot 'n Drying!

I guess this weather is good for something. That kiln is getting so hot, you might be able to fire pottery in there .

Re: Hot 'n Drying!

My mother loved the wood I got from you. I took the double plant stand to her today. And now my mother in law would like a plant stand or two built out of your beautiful cypress. Can I buy some more? Maybe thirty BF or so. I will come and pick it up. Hope you had a great time on the biz, pleasure vacation!! Oh , and now the LOML wants a swing built out of the cypress. We may need to contact Ivey for some more wood. Gotta get some folks together for a dinner soon!!!

Re: Hot 'n Drying!

I was wondering about that "bug thing." Not that Ivey would sell me any bugs!

Re: Hot 'n Drying!

Took out the top 5 layers this morning and the mid-stack is still measuring 12% MC. Probably remove the entire stack this afternoon late and put in a new charge.

Total time in the kiln for this charge was 10 days! Cypress gives up its moisture quickly, evidently. Lumber looks good, no warping or appreciable checking.

Based on the initial results from the first two charges, I am VERY pleased with the results. I know I have a lot to learn going forward, but at this point, I'd recommend a solar kiln to anyone whose needs are similar to ours. This VT plan seems to be almost idiot proof.

Don't mean to bore you. If some of you have further questions, PM me and I'll glady respond.
