I'm having a heck of a time figuring out if it's hickory or oak. Does Hickory have a redish tint, like red oak? I think I may have just QS a hickory, does hickory have QS ray flake, maybe it's a hickory oak - I don't know What's a sure fire way to tell the difference? I'm confused.

Thanks

One other thing that may help, it had a strong tea type smell, not like puke which oak smells like.

When I read your first post I was gonna ask if it smelled like puke. Of course, you are the one who brought that attribute to my attention.

Hickory is close-grained. It does not have the coarse grain you see in oak or ash.

I just bandsawed a hickory (rescue) firewood log to make a mallet. The grain is very, very tight and the color, freshly cut, is markedly different from oak. It looks like maple... very light and the tight grain is obvious. Even a rookie like me could tell the diff in oak and hikker. I know you can.

Jim - well, unless it's obvious, this is my weak spot. If I can get a leaf then I'm ok.

Thanks

Hickory will also have dark streaking(tan to dark brown) from the heart wood. Red Oak will not. Also Hickory or Pecan will have really white white as sap.

Another test is planing a small piece..hard as nails.
