Sawed some Dawn Redwood today..Strange stuff.. like watching it change colors in front of your eyes. Light pink to red to dark red with the sun hitting it.. Will post some pics tommorow.

Also started on the walnut logs and man the color is super. Primo walnut.

Ivey,
Dawn Redwood- Metasequoia glptostroboides (my favorite botanical name of all ) is generally found in the west coastal regions of California and around there. It is one of the three true Redwoods, along with the Giant Sequoia, which have remained essentially unchanged since the prehistoric eras. It is a deciduous conifer and loses it's needles in the winter.
Redwood is a great outdoor wood, as it is very rot and insect resistant (although some of the newer stock isn't as rot resistant as the older growth that is no longer readily available). Redwood has less movement in service than other woods due to it's small cells which don't take up much moisture or shrink too much when drying.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Dave, thanks for the 101 on the dawn redwood. I knew of the great redwoods out west, but had never heard of the dawn. That is kind of a catchey bio name.

My favorite names belong to two different invertebrates (I was trained in Paleoecology) that are 1) the official fossil of the State of Maryland, formerly named Echphora quadricostata , but sadly now renamed; and 2) my all-time favorite that just rolls off your tongue: the Pacific Purple Sea Urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus! Sorry Dave, I just couldn't resist!

I turned some a while back into, what else, a box. Soft and easy to turn it requires sharp tools.

All those pretty colors turn brown.

Jeremy - The wood you saw today was the QS Red Oak. I didn't take home any of the redwood (yet).

But . . . The Redwood is very cool looking as is Kyle's latest walnut haul.
I believe I see a garden bench in my future.

Jeremy,

Let me see how much I have in total as some of this may go to a project I want to do. It looks just like australian lacewood. I believe I will have around 300 bf and want to keep 100 for a dresser. I haven't decided on the price but I promise it will be very affordable.

I pulled the pictures off the camera and will upload probably this evening. They have to be shrunk first.

the dawn redwood pricing will range between 2-3 depending upon whether it is dry or green.
