I've got some bug holes in a bunch of cherry that I acquired, and I'd like some opinions from you folks. I'll go a little bit more into the wood so that you know the history.
The wood was cut from atree on a family farm near Kannapolis about 35 years ago, and air dried in a barn until about four years ago. Then it was purchased by someone who kept it stickered in the upstairs of his garage for four years, I puchased it from him on Sat. The wood is all different thicknesses from 1/2" up to 3-1/2" ( 5pcs are 8+''wide x app. 6' long), but half of the pcs. have worm? or beetle? holes in them. I haven't seen any activity and believe they are long gone, the wood is dry (12% or less).
What I am wondering is: having been in a hot attic for four years, would any bugs be killed ? I am not worried about the holes as they will add character to future projects. I purchased about 250 bd/ft, with cull and waste included for $100, so I'm not worried that I overpaid . But I am wondering how safe it is to store with my other stash of wood, or should I store it seperately ?
Thanks to all in advance,
Jimmy |

They are perfectly round holes about 1/16' or a little less in dia.. It's funny, as I was moving my lumber around I came across some QSRO from one of your runs that had a few holes (not as many as the cherry) in it. But I wasn't worried about them because I knew Scott KD'd 'em.
Man, I do love the QS stuff.

You won't mind if I take a few boards for compensation, right? Not too much, maybe 200bdft or so
Completely layman's opinion here, but I can't see any bugs surviving four hot summers in the attic. I don't know about yours, but mine gets to 130-140 on those triple digit days, and it'd be bug stew city.

I tend to agree with you Bas, It must have been a 130 deg. up there Sat. when I moved them out. After all of the 100 degree days last summer, I'd be shocked. But it's better to be safe than sorry.

As you probably already know, the holes were made by powder post beetles and if you do not see any fresh sawdust around any of the holes, they are pobably long gone -- my suspicion is that they attacked the wood while it was being air dried in the original barn. The high temperature of the garage space probably did kill them, but any fresh sawdust would show they were still active. Kiln drying will finish them off.

I'll keep an eye on the holes, I don't want to kiln dry because the wood is very dry already ( I was being kind when I said 12%).
BTW, congratulations on your 4,000th post (this one).
