I am new to this site, woodworking and the Charlotte area so I am trying to figure out where the best place is to get wood from in this area. Right now I am looking for mostly pine since I am doing a couple of country projects for the wife. I know lowes has a okay selection but I didn't know if anyone had that goto place for wood.

Check out the Region 2 offerings in our Wood Suppliers list found under "Where Are?" on the top menu.

That would be awesome. I could only afford part of it right now. Then I would have to figure out what to build with it.

I live an hour and a half away in the Columbia, SC area and usually buy wood from a guy nearby but he is only open weekdays in the afternoon. If I need something on the weekend, I usually drive to the one on the list as the Charlotte Hardwoods Center near the airport in Charlotte. It has changed hands, however, and was Wurst or something like that last time I went there. It bothers me that I did not see thicker than 1 inch lumber but I only needed that size at the time so I did not investigate. I think they still have the same variety of material. They used to sell the 1 inch planned to the normal 13/16 and they still do for that thickness but thicker (5/4 and up) was sold rough. I presume they still have it and wouldn't be surprised if they sell it planned now. Pricing seems fair to me - but not as low as you may get dealing directly with a kiln or sawmill. They let you go in the back and pick out what you want, get the board feet determined by one of the guys in the back and then go to the counter and pay. You can back up to the loading dock and they'll help you load. Often I am getting only a few boards so I'll just carry it to the truck or trailer.

Good info from the other guys but to be honest it is hit and miss. The place near the Char. airport will let you sort but they really aim for contractors not furniture or craft makers. One of their folks use to come to club meetings but do not know if this is still happening.

Kyle in Iron Station is a good guy but do not know what he is doing now that he not open on Sat. all the time.

Good to know. The two projects I am getting ready to do call for Pine so I guess I will just go to lowes/home depot and see what they have for me. I don't know what the third project calls for yet I will probably do it out of pine as well since they are all Country/Rustic style pieces.

I like Home Depot for 3/4 softwood boards. Around here, at least, they have Scandanavian wood which seems a bit more consistent. I used to make furniture out of softwood, both these boards and construction pieces when I needed something similar. I like hardwood better but softwood will work for a lot of things.
