I was eating lunch at my church the other day and noticed the bench of the upright piano we have in the cafeteria was in pretty bad condition. One leg is broken and the top looks more like a work bench than a piano bench. So I decided to bring it home and get it back into shape. I'd appreciate any refinishing tips you guys have on this project.

Re: Refinishing Piano Bench

My boss asked me to refinish some lab cases that looked about that same condition. The first one took me twenty hours to take apart, re-glue, sand and refinish. I built new ones for the rest.

Building the new ones took less time and looked better when done.

I'm just sayin'...

OK, one word then I'm through...

cardscraper.

OOPs, is that supposed to be two words?

I got the leg fixed and sanded off the old finish off the top today.

Re: Refinishing Piano Bench

I got the new finish on. I tried Minwax's Polyfinish but wasn't too happy with the results. It was hard to control the color tone and it bunched up in low spots and thinned off of corners. I'll stick to the traditional stain then separate finish next time.

It still is a big improvement over how it looked to begin with.
