I am looking at finishing a project "end tables" and building out of red oak. I am including a photo of a fish tank stand that we purchased at a retailer. I realize that the retail product is mostly pressboard but I was wondering if anyone could look at the photo and tell me if there is a finish that will bring red oak to the approximate color of the retail piece? Tough question I know but I have learned the level of expertise our members have is second to none. TIA for all who respond. LOML likes the finish on retail piece so I need to get as close as I can.

You might get close with Varathane's Red Chestnut http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=54
I am thinking that an Amber shellac would do as well.
Try some test samples on scrap stock from your project to make sure.
Varathane has a nice collection of cheap packets of all their stain colors, that makes it easy to do a few finish samples so you can compare the colors.
