Bear with me a minute. Have Delta stopped making scroll saws in preference to the dewalt line. ??? Now, I have several saws including some good ones but the cheaper delta 16" that may not be a gem but I have enjoyed using it.. It is blowing a fuse the second I turn it on after replacement. Has anyone had success getting one fixed at Delta or should I just forget it. sometimes repairs cost as much as a new machine. Any suggestions as to the problem. Harry

Re: delta scroll saw

I typically fix the broken stuff myself - And I don't know too much about what's happening with Delta or their parent/sister companies, but here's what I do know:

Usually when a machine blows a fuse that quickly, it's representitive of a direct or dead short in the system - It could be as simple as a loose wire on a motor or switch. Having a simple delta variable speed 16" saw myself, I know it's not the smoothest saw in the world, and I wouldn't doubt it if years of vibration caused somthing to come loose.

It may be worth unplugging the saw and taking some things apart - Even if you're not an electrical expert, you should be able to spot an arching wire, or a loose connection. Arcing wires look like somebody struck a match, and will be associated with black carbon build up. Wire terminals should be tight, and lighlty tugging on wires should not cause them to come off.

If you're not comfortable, don't do it - Electricty can and has injured and killed people - I'm just telling you what I would do.

Hope this helps

Re: delta scroll saw

Gregory, wow your some technician. I decided I'd follow your instructions and took the beast out on the picnic table and the first take apart was the dust collector that now is gone for good. I discovered quickly the arm was what seemed like frozen so I struggled with the dust collector and discovered when it finally came loose it had been wedged somehow with the lower arm and I was smart enough to realize it blew the fuse immediately and upon replacing the fuse voila it works fine. Thanks so very much for your encouragement. Harry

Re: delta scroll saw

Harry, with all the know-how North Carolina Woodworker members have, if it cannot be fixed, it ain't broke.

Good on ya, Greg, for piping in with a helpful hint.

Re: delta scroll saw

Glad I could help - A seized motor would definatley cause a dead short. I bet 90% of the "broken" tools out there are simple fixes like that.

As luck would have it, the switch on my Delta Planer just fractured - Cheap plastic in the switch... Ordered a new one from a place in Utah for 20bucks - I don't seem to have any luck with the new Delta website..

Re: delta scroll saw

Too late, but I got a 12 1/2" planer that may work as a switch donor.

Re: delta scroll saw

Ha yeah beat me to it but I was going to tell you that it was most likely the motor got bound up and it loaded the fuse and poped it. I have a similar Delta Saw and after having a finger in the wrong place at the wrong time poped a fuse on it when the motor started to load up... Basically the blade got stuck in the piece pulled it up and my finger went under on the downstroke and bound the works up and faster than I could hit the switch it poped the fuse and released probably saved my finger.. Glad you got it fixed.
